I am interested in finding long lost cousins, aunts, uncles and anyone else that could be related to us.

The Meadway unusual name is of Anglo-Saxon origin and is a topographical surname denoting residence by the river Medway, which runs through the counties of Kent and Sussex. The river name is recorded very early, in the Saxon Chronicles of 764, as 'medunuaeian' (meduwaen), and is derived from the British, pre-Roman, river name 'wey' or 'way', with the Celtic word 'medu', meaning 'mead' and referring to the colour of the water, a golden brown. In the modern idiom the surname can be found as Medway Medeway and Meadway. The marriage between Mary Medway and John Thomas was recorded at St. Katherine by the Tower, London, on the 27th May 1680, while James Medway was christened at St. Michael's, Queenhithe, London, on the 16th June 1712. Abraham Maydway was christened at St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, London on 27th September 1715, whilst George Meadway, was a witness at St Giles, Cripplegate, London on June 27th 1824. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Alexander at the Medewaye, which was dated 1302, in the County Records of Sussex, during the reign of King Edward 1, known as the Hammer of the Scots, 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

The information contained on this website is a work in progress and is regularly updated as we add, edit and correct information. As with most current research methods, much of the information comes from on-line sources and although interesting, isn't always accurate or documented. Quite frankly, it sometimes takes a leap of faith to make a connection, a leap that can make the genealogy purist shudder. We have not uploaded any GEDCOM files, choosing instead to enter each record one at a time. We have noted information that has been verified, typically through a copy of birth, death or marriage certificate, government records or other identified source.

The Lee family of the United States is a historically significant Virginia and Maryland political family, whose many prominent members are known for their accomplishments in politics and the military. Through the past few hundred years it was believed that Colonel Richard Lee of Virginia descended from the Lee family of Coton Hall, Alveley in the county of Shropshire, England. But in 1987 this ancestral line was challenged by a hypothesis that Richard Lee, son of a Worcester clothier, was the Virginian Colonel.

The family became prominent in colonial America when Richard Lee I ("The Immigrant") immigrated to Virginia in 1639 and made his fortune in tobacco.

Members of the family include Thomas Lee (1690–1750), a founder of the Ohio Company and a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses; Francis Lightfoot Lee (1734–1797) and Richard Henry Lee (1732–1794), signers of the United States Declaration of Independence; Thomas Sim Lee (1745–1819), Governor of Maryland and, most famous, General Robert E. Lee (1807–1870) Confederate States of America commander in the United States Civil War. President Zachary Taylor and Chief Justice Edward Douglass White were also descendants of Richard Lee I. Confederate President Jefferson Davis married Sarah Knox Taylor, daughter of Zachary Taylor.

Most recently, family members have marked over two hundred years of political service in the United States, as Blair Lee III, a descendant of Richard Henry Lee, served as Lieutenant Governor of Maryland from 1971-1979 and Acting Governor of Maryland from 1977–1979. Charles Carter Lee, a descendant of Henry Lee III and a Superior Court Judge in Los Angeles County, was named the U.S. team's Chef de Mission by the United States Olympic Committee for the Beijing Olympics.

Please check out the site and sign the guestbook. We welcome your feedback as well as any data that can make our website more accurate and/or complete.

The Meadway family is the best family in all the world. Sure, we have our quirks (Some of us quite a few), we have our history (we haven't always been the nicest or most respected)and I'm sure we've had our enemies, but I wouldn't want to belong to any other family! I look forward to hearing from and eventually meeting you all!
