About The Hoolihan/Kelly/Foresta Family
Please sign in to see more.
I HAVE DEDICATED THIS SITE TO MY PARENTS TERESINA AND BARNABAS F. HOOLIHAN`

Hoolihan is an Irish name deriving from the Gaelic O h-Uallachain, uallach, meaning proud. The family name appears to derive principally from the Southwestern and Western parts of Ireland and is closely related to the names HOULIHAN and HOLOHAN.
Hoolihan, and the variants, are almost certainly an Anglicised version of the name. The spelling of the names Hoolihan, Houlihan, Holohan etc. were probably
recorded by clerks acting for landlords who attempted to write the names of the
 tenants phonetically. `Ahan` is Gaelic.
The Primary Valuation property survey of 1848-64 records indicate that the Hoolihans came principally from Counties Cork, Kerry and Limerick while analysis of similar records for Hoolihan variants show that the O h-Uallachain also had strong representation in County Clare and County Tipperary. Information on Hoolihan from `Origins of Hoolihan Name`.
