About  Crellins & Speddings of Cumberland

Welcome to my Family Tree .This all started while clearing my loft and found the Family Bibles for my Spedding Grandparents and my Crellin Great Great Grandparents. While looking through I realised there were so many lives and stories that I knew nothing about that I was intrigued. So began the long interesting and sometimes frustrating journey . The Speddings had been Corn Millers and Farmers , the Crellins Coal Miners , little did I realise how often they would coincide and how diverse some of the leads would be . I have Handloom Weavers , Policemen , Potters ,Corn Millers ,Druggists, Master Mariners ,Hatters , Tailors and even a Crinoline Maker along with many Coal Miners, what a great journey it has been so far . My Great Great Grandparents William and Elizabeth (Known as Betsy) Crellin had 16 children and only 7
survived to adulthood , how hard life was then . I have seen the foundations of the house they lived in and I will never cease to wonder how they brought up such big families in such tiny homes .
On the 1911 Census Ann Crellin nee Eilbeck is living next door to her Daughter Rachael Ann Elizabeth Crellin at Southfield Broughton Moor which was where I was Born . Catherine Ann Crellin and her husband James Hayton are living at Planting Villas Broughton Moor which was our first house after we Married !!!!!

I dedicate this site to all those Ancestors who have gone before that have made me what I am today and especially to my Mam ,Olive Spedding and my Dad ,William Crellin .
My Grandfather Isaac Crellin was my inspiration for having an enquiring mind , a love of books and a tremendous appreciation of the countryside . He was born illegitimate ,sent to work in the coal mines at 13 years old and retired when he was 67 years old . He was self educated and I will always carry with me the wonderful memories of the many hours we shared .
