About Engelhardt Genealogy
I have taken a special interest when I have free time in creating and adding family history data on this website. My interest is primarily for two reasons, 1). First, I wanted to pass any/all family history/information to all Interested family members so they can glimpse into the past and discover their own family genealogy and/or history. 2). I have always been interested in finding out where my surname and my ancestors originated from in Europe. While researching the Engelhardt's in the past I had already obtained information regarding my mother's origin of family (surname: Straub) and decided to include the pedigree and branch off from the "Engelhardt" surname. Last, I have included the family genealogy of my wife (surname: Siebold) and her ancestors so that my wife, our children, and I can better understand the discovery of who we are, where we came from, and to chronicle our German origin. I encourage any family members/relatives who access this website to contact me via the Guestbook or directly via telephone/text to inform me on any input he/she may have on the information captured. In addition, I highly encourage any family members to make contact with on any updates or new information known. I am also interested in any photos anyone would like to share and include in the website. When the opportunity exists I continue to look to make updates as necessary and periodically renew the visitor access code password for family relatives to access the website. Please contact me for the new password if you are unable to successfully access the data. Privacy data is protected on the website - Mike _____________________________________________________________________
What does Engelhardt mean?
German: from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements engel (see Engel) + hard 'brave', 'hardy', 'strong'.

ENGELHARDT FAMILY

Engelhardt is a Baltic-German Russian noble and baronial family. The family name is sometimes
given as "von Engelhardt". The legendary founder of the Engelhardt's, Carl Bernard Engelhardt (1159–1230), was a knight in the Third Crusade to liberate the Holy Sepulcher, and received the name of Engelhardt for saving the life of the French king Philip II Augustus in the Siege of Acre. The known historical origins of the family are in Switzerland, where Henry Engelhardt is mentioned in the years 1383-1390 as a citizen and councilman in Zurich. In the early Fifteenth Century, George Engelhardt lived in Livonia. From him stem all the nobles and barons of the Engelhardt family in the later Russia. The first Engelhardt to become a Russian subject was Werner Engelhardt, who had served previously in the Polish army. He accepted Orthodoxy, taking the name Jeremiah, and died before 1672. His son Sigismund (Stepan, after the acceptance of Orthodoxy) was a Moscow nobleman and stolnik (personal attendant to the Tsar) and a lieutenant in the Smolensk gentry. Other sons of Jeremiah, Yuri and Ivan, were also stolniks. The noble family Engelhardt is recorded in Book VI of the genealogy of the province of Smolensk, and its coat of arms is included in Part VI of the General Armorial. The baronial line of Engelhardt is recorded in Part V of the genealogy books of the provinces of Yaroslava, Ekaterinoslavskaya, and Kursk. Notable Engelhardt's include:
- Alexander Nikolaevich Engelhardt (1832–1893): renowned scholar and agriculturalist.
- Vasily Pavlovich Engelhardt (1828–1915): astronomer, and chronicler of Suvorov's Swiss expedition.
- Fyodor Engelhardt, general.
- Alexander Bogdanovich Engelhardt (1795–1859): baron, lieutenant general, chief of southern military settlements.
- Valerian Engelhardt (1798-1856): general and civil engineer.
- William Karpovich Engelhardt (alternately Wilhelm Heinrich Engelhardt or Vasily Karlovich Engelhardt)(1726–1797): general, and Lieutenant Governor of Vyborg.
- Vasily Vasilyevich (born 1758): officer in the Second Turkish War, senator.
- Nikolai Fedorovich Engelhardt (born 1799), brother of Valerian F. Engelhardt: Lieutenant General, and Commander of the 15th Infantry Division in the Sevastopol campaign of 1854 -55.
- Otto Moritz Ludwig (1778–1842): Professor of Mineralogy at Tartu University.
- Sergey Petrovich Engelhardt (1795–1870) - Governor of Mogilev.
- Baron Gustav Moritz Constantin (1828–1881): professor and Dean of the Theological Faculty of the University of Dorpat.
- Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister of the UK and Leader of the Liberal Democrats, whose grandmother was Kira von Engelhardt. ENGELHARDT COAT OF ARMS / ENGELHARDT FAMILY CREST The first hereditary surnames on German soil are found in the second half of the 12th century, slightly later than in England and France. However, it was not until the 16th century that they became stabilized. The practice of adopting hereditary surnames began in the southern areas of Germany, and gradually spread northwards during the Middle Ages. The word Heraldry is derived from the German HEER, (a host, an army) and HELD, (champion): the term BLASON, by which the science is denoted in French, English, Italian and German, has most probably its origin in the German word 'BLAZEN' (to blow the horn). Whenever a new knight appeared at a Tournament, the herald sounded the trumpet, and as the competitors attended with closed vizors, it was his duty to explain the bearing of the shield or coat-armor belonging to each. Thus, the knowledge of the various devices and symbols was called 'Heraldry'. The Germans transmitted the word to French, and it reached England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. An English family now called ENGELHARDT originated in Schnellenstein, Silesia, where the name is first recorded in the 14th century. They trace their descent from Francis ENGLEHART who settled in England in 1722, when he was employed as a craftsman to work on the plaster ceilings at Hampton Court. The name was originally of English, German and Dutch origin, from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements ENGEL+HARD, an extended form of ING the name of a Germanic tribe who invaded England and North Britain in the 5-6th centuries, and gave their name to England. When the first immigrants from Europe went to America, the only surnames current in the new land were Indian names which did not appeal to Europeans vocally, and the Indian names did not influence the surnames or Christian names already possessed by the immigrants. Most immigrants could not read or write and had little or no knowledge as to the proper spelling, and their names suffered at the hands of the government officials. The early town records are full of these mis-spelled names most of which gradually changed back to a more conventional spelling as education progressed.

What does Engelhardt mean? Origins of Engelhardt (German)
