The name Barker is generally believed by family historians to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon word Beore or from the Anglo-French word Berovier, meaning Sheppard. Many etymologist derive the name from the ancient trade barker or tanner, or bark for tanning, The name is found on ancient English and earlier American records, spelled Barcarious, Barkere, Barkar, and Barker which is generally accepted today. One of the earliest English names Barker dates back to 1200. Ralph DeCalverhall progenitor of the Barker families lived in the year 1200. He married Margaret Pigot, was father of William LeBarker. They carried the name DeCalverhall for six generations of the manor of Calverhall. They later were known as LeBarker for five generations. The first Barkers to journey to America was Robert, who came to the Massachusetts Colony in 1628. They are among the earliest settlers of the colonies. There are several different lines of the Barker lineage and these, besides the Massachusetts line is the Connecticut line, the Delaware line, the Virginia line and others. We are from the Virginia line, as are most of the Barkers in Boone County, West Virginia.
In the year 1751 Captain James Barker of Portsmouth England married Mary Smith. He and Mary left soon after marrying and came to America. Mary and James had at least two sons Issac and Jacob.
