Benjamin Charles Hart left Kelvedon in Essex to arrived in
Australia around 1853. No point of entry into Australia has been found, although family rumour has it he was a ships captain and jumped ship in Melbourne to head for the goldfields. Benjamin was a pupil at the Naval college at Greenwich at age 13 where he obtained his Masters Certificate. Benjamin's only brother also made his way to Australia and settled around Toodyay in West Australia around 1846. His father, also Benjamin Charles, was a lieutenant in the navy and the family had
moved from Stratford St Mary in Suffolk in 1823 with Ben snr's mother. Young Benjamin had 3 sisters, one staying on in Kelvedon and marrying William Grist in 1861. In Australia, young Benjamin married and settled on the Goldfields of Central Victoria, before taking up land in the Western District at Barkly. His family went on to become shearers and farmers and are still in the district today.
