About Our Norwegian Roots
This tree shows the descendants of Marta Larsdatter Nordbø who came to America from Norway in 1858. Marta was born in Norway 1786 and married Lars Bjørnson Ekrene in 1809. Lars was born in 1780 and died in 1821, shortly after the birth of the youngest son, Jacob. Four sons and two daughters were born to this couple. All, except for Dorte, who died during the voyage, settled in Minnesota and lived productive and long lives in their adopted country. After the death of her first husband, Marta married Ivar Iverson Hanasand and gave birth to two more sons. Ivar died in 1833 leaving her alone to raise the children.

As her children grew, married and had children of their own they looked toward a better life in America. All the children immigrated to America during the middle of the 19th century. After most of her children had left Norway, Marta also left at the age of 71 with her son Lars and his wife Malene and their family. It was thought she died shortly after coming to America. In fact she lived at least another 18 years in America before she died at the age of about 89. She is last found living with Lars and Malene in the 1875 census in Newburg, Fillmore, Minnesota. The exact date of her death and burial site is unknown. Marta gave birth to eight children between 1810 and 1828. These children all married and between them had fifty-five children. The grandchildren of Margit would eventually settle in many different parts of the United States and Canada.

Included in this tree are only the direct descendants and spouses. The hope is that this will make it easier to identify relationships and lineage. If you find your name in this site that means you are a direct descendant or the spouse of a direct descendant of Marta Larsdatter Nordbø. I welcome your input and help in adding to accuracy and helping this site to grow.
