14th July 2011:
 Request from Carol(ADMIN)
Please can everyone use CAPITAL letters for your SURNAMES ALSO please can you check that I have added the correct Ancestors to your trees?

Would you all try and do some additional work on your trees yourselves, all of the names have drop down editing boxes with blue tick next to them, so very easy:0) It will help me with the work, it will also ensure that the CORRECT family data is added if YOU do some of it, as without your written confirmation to me, I CAN NOT guarantee my findings for your families to be correct :0) I would really appreciate scanned copies(correct way up, please)of any Birth, Marriage, Death certificates and Wills etc, for the site as this will enable my research to continue on your behalf, via addresses, informants etc, etc.

If you find anything that you are unsure about which I have found for your families, or have a need to query, confirm or deny then please contact me so that corrections/additions/deletions can be made. I am contactable either via here on main page or my email address which is: Manxie55@hotmail.co.uk OR my Home Address is:

Hello, Welcome to my first webpages for my UK
 SHIRLEY/KNEALE/ARMSTRONG/CORRIN/LLOYD/WILLCOCKS/MADDEN/JONES family and their connections.
I hope that you enjoy browsing my site and find the information contained therein helpful and
 informative.
 *************************************************************************************************

So that everyone viewing this site understands, you may notice the spelling variants of
some SURNAMES within some of the families on this site and in some of the records, censi etc.
I have written them as found spelt by the enumerators or as transcribed by those scribes who
could read & write and who were in a position to be able to record & document these records ie:
 Censi and Wills.
They have not been mis-spelt by myself, but entered as I have found them.
 *************************************************************************************************

SHIRLEY - This unusual surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a locational name from any of the various places called Shirley in Derbyshire, Hampshire, Surrey and the West Midlands.
The placename derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century "scir", meaning bright, plus "leah", wood, clearing. Shirley in Derbyshire and Hampshire were recorded as "Sirelei" in the Domesday Book of 1086, and Shirley in Surrey was recorded as "Shyrley" in the Feet of Fines of 1461. The surname dates back to the early 13th Century.

Most of my Paternal SHIRLEY family came from Cornwall & Devon, though my Maternal family were born on the Isle of Man,Liverpool & Scotland. I have a younger sister called Valerie Rosina and brother Brian Kneale. Valerie has been an Accountant for many years but recently got a job at her local Post Office doing the accounts. She is also the CEO of Manxknits, her Home Knitting cottage industry with other women who knit for her, she sometimes uses the wool from the rare breed of sheep known to the IOM called the Loghtan Sheep.
She also works up at Cregneish in the south of the island, during the holiday season this is an original small Manx village with thatched crofters cottages where local crafts are made and sold as a Living Museum.
Valerie has also an unbreakable link with the music industry, lives and breathes it beyond all else! She has always been musical, but it was via her husband Barry NELSON and his various Bands which Val also has a hand in as Bass Guitarist and vocalist, that allowed her to fly! She also has her own music label " Geode Music IOM Ltd " and sign up and look after new local bands on the island. They won the Battle of the Bands competition 2010 on the IOM with their new band "RedGap".

Please copy & paste on this link to hear their songs,

They have several CD's burned which have had great praise. In 2017 their most recent large gig was held in Norway and a couple of years previously they were in Madrid, Spain. They have toured the UK and Barry worked and lived in Ireland where he worked as a solo artist before he married.

Our YOUNG brother Brian's hobbies include photography and he was also a musician, playing Guitar in a local band called " The Tynwalders" a very popular Folk group on the island. His full time job though is as an Air Traffic Controller 2nd in command at Ronaldsway Airport on the island.
My brother Brian has produced a website of his photographs taken from around the Isle of Man, they are worth a look, he mainly concentrating on the TT Races at the moment and is working on behalf of an Australian Road Racing Magazine who buy his photo's. His URL is: http://www.manxdigitalimages.com/

Re: Myself? Wife , Mother, Grandmother, A Retired trained nurse and an amateur genealogist :0) I enjoy gardening when able but have been diagnosed now in 2013, confirmed in 2015 that I have Sarcoidosis which has been very debilitating. I have had to leave my part time job at Twiglets Pre-School Nursery as their cleaner. A position I have held for over 4 years. I now have CRPS and Degenerative cervical and lumbar spine so work on site as often as I can. So, help from you all with your trees will be really appreciated.

************************************************************************************************* As Members, please feel free to add any relevant information that you may have to this site, but try to keep it as precise as possible, with proof of information if any is available to you such as, census/certificates,family bible entries etc, as it is important to keep facts as straight as possible, to prevent mix-ups later on and so as not to offend family with incorrect facts. You can add stories to the " Stories/Memories section " if you wish, as this adds flesh to the bones,of our ancestors and will make for interesting reading, none added yet,
 Will you be the first??.

I will try to verify your entries where possible,if you are unable to do so. Please get permission for any photo's that you add to the site, if you yourself do not own the rights to the photo's, of course ask only the living :0) Unless you are in contact with the spirits of the deceased Hee, Hee:0)

Thanking you all for your very kind contributions and photographs to our website. I must add here that I will be eternally grateful to my cousin, Linda ROWLAND(my 2nd Admin) via my WILLCOCKS family in Scotland, Devon,Cornwall & London. She has been an inspiration and an amazingly great source of information for which I am indebted to her for her unceasing generosity, patience and untold fun loving cheerfulness with my queries about my family researches as I was learning, especially with my difficult John Walter SHIRLEY whom we still have not found !! :0)
Recently in January 2011 a big THANK YOU must go to Mal GIRLING for helping me to further the KNAPMAN/GIRLING tree which has taken me back 4 Generations to 1660.

Also, a very big thank you to Leo BRADLEY for his help with the GLENTON, HINDLEY tree and more recently many thanks to John WILKINSON for his great help with WILKINSON,MOTH additions taking the tree back to 1737 and photo's for the WILKINSON, MOTH,LLOYD,COLE family. It is very much appreciated, Carol XX (Admin)

Briefly:
Our father Ernest Charles Robert SHIRLEY was taken to the island with his young brother Francis Cyril SHIRLEY by their widowed father Robert John SHIRLEY who's wife, Margaret Louisa SHIRLEY formally WILLCOCKS died not long after the Blitz over Plymouth in 1942/3. The Blitz caused extreme damage to their two homes which were 1 & 2 Harvey Cottages,Torpoint. The family which included other siblings plus Grandma SHIRLEY's parents the WILLCOCKS and their Grandchildren, were evacuated to Newquay,Cornwall where Grandma died at Newquay Hospital. Our Grandad Robert John SHIRLEY RN Pensioner worked on the Torpoint and possibly the Saltash Chain Ferries which cross the Tamar River to Plymouth. When he moved to
the IOM in c.1944, he found work at HMS Valkyrie on Douglas Promenade as a Quarter Master where he was known as " Pop SHIRLEY "during WW2.
He re-married an Irish lady called Julie and after Granddad died she married again for 4th time? to our friend Jonathon KNEALE's Granddad.

I have lived in East Sussex with my husband Alan since August 1982. We will have been married for 40 years as of Jan 17th 2016 and we have two gorgeous daughters Fay and Suzanne plus three gorgeous Grandchildren Zara & Ethan and Harper. Our daughter Fay was married on 7th June 2014 to her partner of 10 years, Christopher HOWELL.

PLEASE sign my Guest Book when you visit, and let me know if you find my site helpful or just to let me know that you have browsed.
Thank you so much for visiting,
 Carol

PS. I am adding a some post scripts because I wish to show our THANKS to the many, many people who have helped me enormously during my research and they are Linda ROWLAND who has been an inspiration and great friend and cousin whom I have not yet met but am in contact with via email and phone.
And also to Marjery CORRIN my cousin again, whom I have not met, she too has been a real brick and inspiration with our CORRIN Links I love them both to bits!! Our grateful thanks must also go to Melanie SMITH and John BENTLEY from the " Briercliffe Society " in Burnley,Lancs. Mel has very kindly allowed me to use her transcriptions for our CORRIN and connected family BMD's and MI's and also allowed the use on site of a photo of the CORRIN Grave at the Church of St. James in Briercliffe, courtesy of David BARKER. Thank you.

The Memorial Clock for James CORRIN b. 1833 photo's use on our site was kindly allowed by John BENTLEY, he tells me that James CORRIN b.1833 on IOM was also the Secretary of the Briercliffe Reading Rooms in Haggate. James CORRIN was a very active inhabitant of Briercliffe and also had a " Penny Bank "there too. The Memorial Clock in the picture was erected for him at the Reading Rooms and the building was renamed in the late 1980's/early 1990's as Corrin House by the owner now, who's name I know, but won't post here.

Also my immense thanks must go to Bettye KIRKWOOD from Australia & Sylvia BIRCH and not forgetting Yvonne WATSON and also Vera LOWE via the Dyfed List and the Listers of said list regarding my LLOYD/BATINE/JAMES/JOHN/WILLIAMS ancestors of my husband Alan's and for pointing me in the right direction of Wales and for their invaluable help with Welsh Wills/Probate and the History of the above names which have an extremely interesting Lineage. Thanks to the Lancsgen list, Devon and Cornwall Lists.
To one and all, my grateful thanks and appreciation, Carol XXXXX

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.

Announcement! Please can everyone look at their trees to see IF I have their correct ancestor info? Thank you, Carol (Admin)
