About The Sier Family
Please sign in to see more.
This site is devoted to the trees of both the Sier and Ibbetson families.

Both families have their origins in England. The spelling of the name Sier has varied over time, with Syer being the original version and Sayer, Saier and Sire being later variations. The pronunciation has, largely, remained the same. The Syer name comes from Norfolk, with the first emigrant to Australia in 1852. Here, the links with the Ahern, Slattery, Loan, McDonald and Ketterer families were made. These were immigrants from Ireland, Canada and Germany during the 1850s - a period in Australia's history synonymous with the Gold Rush. In fact a couple of these families established themselves in the goldmining areas around Bendigo, Victoria. A later migration from Northern Ireland brought the Smyth family to Queensland in 1887, where it joined with the Hobbs family from Somerset, and then the Sier family in Victoria in 1946.

The Ibbetson family hailed from West Riding Yorkshire, England, and emigrated to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1911. Names from the paternal side of the tree include Rushton, Ogden and Barrett, all from the Lancashire-Yorkshire area. The maternal side - Wrenn, Castle, Barman, Edwards, - comes from Sussex, Middlesex, Kent and Surrey, while the first Borit came to England in the 1850s from the department of Charente Maritime, France. The Castle(Collins) family migrated to Victoria, Australia, in 1921.

Members of the Sier family in Victoria, Australia, have contributed data on their own families. To respect their privacy, options on this site restrict the display of data on living members to only those who have the access password.
