Ray English and Mary Evelyn Pool

"English, just like the language" is what we say when people look at us oddly and ask, "How do you spell that?"

Ray grew up on the family farm just outside of Ozark on the Arkansas River while Evelyn grew up just
down the road in Altus. Ray and Evelyn were married in 1941 in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas.
They headed to California for good in 1952 and bought a home in Westminster in 1962. The place many
of us will always consider home. They had been married for 52 years when Evelyn passed away in 1993.
Ray left us in 2001. Ray and Evelyn are my Mom and Dad. They had 12 children. Two died shortly after
birth. Ray and Evelyn have 84 direct descendants. By the grace of God 78 of us are still walking the
planet. #85 and 86 are on their way. Anela English-Mehdizadeh (Oct 11) and
my daughter Melissa English de Beltran (Oct 19) are expecting.

Our English and Pool Families

Our John English (1685-1727) first appears in the American Colonies thru church records. Hanover County, Virginia was created in 1719 from the area called St. Paul’s Parish. The St. Paul’s Parish Vestry Book 1706-1786 states that on May 8, 1715 John English and others are to clear a road from Stony Run to Half Sink Road. It also states that on June 2, 1721 John was appointed to survey a road from Stagg Creek to Stony Run. I believe he was born in the American Colonies and that his dad was from England and had the surname Inglish.

Our Pool family history traces back to a Medieval family living in Essex, England in the early 1500's with the surname Pettypool. The name changed over time from Pettypool to P Pool and on to Poole and Pool. Some families even share both the Poole and Pool surnames.

Our Talley and Pitcock Familes

Nathaniel Talley was born in about 1751 in Loudoun County, Virginia. He and wife Sarah White lived in Halifax County, Virginia and had four children that we know of. Nancy, David, Samuel and Henry. That is where for the time being that we lose three of them. Dr. Henry Talley 1778-1882 bought land in Kentucky & Tennessee then eventually settled in Marshall County, Tennessee. Some of his descendants stayed in the Marshall and Lincoln County areas. Many went on to Texas, mainly in the Grayson County area and some on into Roosevelt County, New Mexico. Dr. Henry's Grandson James Calvin Talley made his way Texas for awhile and then to Franklin County, Arkansas. As of Jan 2014 there are 2457 descendants of Nathaniel Talley listed here with 1422 spouses.

Thomas Pitcock's son Stephen was born in Pennsylvania in 1723. Stephen and wife Rachel Perkins would end up in Frederick County, Virginia. Many of his descendants moved on to Monroe County, Kentucky and Washington County, Tennessee where they remained for the next couple of generations. Later some would move on to Illinois, Oklahoma Indian Territory, Texas, and New Mexico. One of them would make his way to Saline County, Arkansas where my Grandmother was born.
