About Weiss Flint families
This web page of family trees was created by Bill Flint, beginning with his grandparents. We end up with Family Trees of the Flint, Bennett, Weiss and Spiller families.

At this point, there are 15 generations from 1600 for the Flint family, 8 generations from 1838 for the Bennett family, 6 generations from 1860 for both the Weiss and Spiller families.

We are descendents of Europeans who immigrated to Canada in the mid 1800s or very early 1900s.

The Flint family came to Canada in 1875 (Charles W Flint; 1853 - 1939). He was a British soldier born in Belfast, Ireland and came to be stationed in Frontenac, Ontario (now Kingston) around 1875. After he settled in Canada, he married and raised a family of 14, Bill Flint's grandfather being one. He went on to become a saddler, then a harness maker and finally a labourer. His ancestors are all from Ashover, Derbyshire, England, and back 8 generations, the oldest found is William Flint born around 1600.

The Bennett family is originally from Scotland. The oldest found was William b 1838 in England and immigrated to Canada. He had 10 children in Canada, with the 8th being William C. Bennett who was born in Kingston, Canada in 1867. He listed his ancestry as Scottish in a Canadian census report. We don't know when they immigrated from Scotland.

The Weiss and Spiller families came to Canada in 1916. Martha Spiller b. 1895 and Maxwell Weiss b 1894, grandparents of Bill Flint emigrated from Switzerland. They got married soon after they arrived and raised a family of 8.

The Spiller family is from Wigoltengen, Thurgau, Switzerland. I'm told that they were in Switzerland for 500 years. They owned a textile factory. I (Bill Flint) visited this factory and the then owner in 1975. He showed me a book of history of factories and it had said that the original Spiller came from what is now Germany. The Canton of Thurgau to which Wigoltingen belongs borders Germany and offically became part of Switzerland in 1803 so very likely then, like the Weiss family, the migration from Germany to Switzerland was merely a movement of a few miles.

The Weiss family orginated in Germany with Oscar Reinhart Weiss who went to St Gallen, Switzerland in 1880s from Plaue, Thüringen, Germany, a distance of 500 kms. He was a textile pattern maker and moved from one textile town in Germany to another (St Gallen) in Switzerland.
