Thank you so much for the information. I have the one tree but it is becoming so over whelming to other family members to search through so thought it might be easier to divide it up into seperate sites for each line. I just don't want to lose my main tree.

Hi Mary,

We have only ONE Main Family Tree, which I term as the "MASTERFILE". This is so that we do not have to have lots of little trees to connect to.

The MAIN person is my Grand-Father, hence the name of the tree. He and my Grand-Mother had 8 children, and each line (with the exception of the youngest - who had no issues) can be accessed from the home page in respect of the 7 who do have descendants.

So, if some in any of those lines want to create their own tree (some have done so), then they can do so and we can hopefully bounce of each other to correct information.

I will never upload a GEDCOM to this site unless I have to, because there are so many inconsistencies with data not uploading properly or missing.

The important factors are that ALL DATA, must be stored securely, including photographs.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Hi Harvey,

Thank you for you're reply, I have decided to just keep the main tree, as it has nearly 34,000 and growing, it would just be too much additional work, as I am like you and do not upload Gedcoms to my site, I type in each individual person and piece of information myself, I have came across the same thing you have stated, that too much is misplaced or lost with Gedcoms. I love your tribalpages site (I had a look at the photographs playing on the slide show - I love photographs, regardless of whether I know the people or not, and you have some amazing ones on there). I also viewed your website, you have done an amazing job! I would like to do a website, but not too sure how to go about doing so.

Thank you so much & Blessings to you and yours

Mary Helen

Just a thought on the other side - I do my main editing by loading gedcoms. I keep all my master files on my computer and a couple external storage devices and use TP as a viewing platform to share the information as well as an emergency backup.

Many of my sources just don't work or show well on TP so I find keeping the master on the computer far better. I also don't have any other sdministrators since everything must come from MY resident copy. Folks with information email me about it and I enter it. This also makes it possible for me to keep the information on living relatives in the file but not load it online unless they are willing to have it there.

Finally, I have to do alot of merges, which are difficult on TP so gedcom loads work far better for me.

Fortunately, the TP format is flexible enough to suit both of us

I understand that it works well for some, just not for me, I mean I have my master file and all of my research/notes etc on my computer, and several storage devices as a just in case, but when I originally did my Tribal Pages site and uploaded the gedcom, there were over 3000 individuals "lost", none of the notes, medical histories, stories, etc were put on to the site, and the select few that did have them were only partial; and then there was the "mix-ups" that occured. I had persons born in 1800s married to someone in the 1600s or listed as a child of the person born in the 1800s because of similar or same surnames. It was too big of a mess to straighten out one by one, so I just deleted it all and started over again adding each in individually. I may have done something wrong there, I don't know, as I have never had that happen before when uploading a gedcom from one software to another. That's why I won't upload a gedcom to tribalpages. I have noticed similar problems on others websites, where there are a lot of "mix-ups" similar to the ones I experienced, and they had uploaded the gedcoms as well, verses entering the information themselves. It maybe because of the size of my files as well?
