Is this a better alternative?

I have been looking carefully at this, following it's mention in one of the family history mags this month. Basically it is a seemingly very comprehensive family history software package which you download and host on your own website, registering your own domain name. The cost of the software seems a reasonable $30 and hosting cost about $5 pm or less if you pay annually. Slightly more than TP but I think more up to date, technology wise. TP is 10 years old now and as Les says, is not being developed, is not responsive to customer requests and problems and is allowing all manner of absolute tripe to be posted, by way of advertising.

This is the link:

http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php

I have been through all the analysis that you can do without actually buying the product and I think it looks very good. There is an active forum and as far as I can see, first class responses from really knowledgeable people. I emailed the owner with a few questions and I had a full response from him THE SAME DAY.

To assess it, they provide a couple of databases for you to play around with. You can't download a 30 day version to test with your own data and they explain why in the FAQ section.

I am seriously tempted but I would be interested to hear the opinion of others. Over to you, Les, Alan, Eileen, et al

I don't think this one will allow 2 tree linking either but from what I understand you can give different people access to different branches (families) of your tree, so that might achieve what you want; you put your whole tree on there and give your mothers family access to her half and your fathers side access to his half.

To answer your other question, there is no make a book facility on this one either, other than printing out pages and binding them together. The only one that does that as far as I know is Ancestry and they were knocking that on the head in Sept as I recall, although I did hear a rumour that they might have reconsidered this. (My Canvas).

Thanks. I like this idea. This is what I was looking for. I only one tree; that is my mum and dad's tree linked through their marriage. This means I will have to rename my entire tree to cater for both families.

What I need now is creating two different access codes.

Dad's access code will take my dad's family to their side of the tree; and my mums access code will take my mums family to their side of the tree.

Do you know how to do this? Do you know any thread that explains this?

Hi Francis, why not try this simple way, and see if it suits you. As no doubt you know, TP has put a place where you can put LINKS.

Go to your MUMS FATHER when you are in VISITORS MODE. At the top of the page select the URL address, go to Edit and add this into one of TP Links, and NAME it MOTHERS TREE. Do the SAME for your FATHERS Father and go to TP Link and name it FATHERS TREE.

I have just done this on my tree to my FATHERS name for you to see it working.

Go to the bottom of my HOME PAGE and you will see USEFUL LINKS and on the LEFT MY FATHERS TREE ( Text) Click on this and you will see his Tree

Let me know how you get on

Hi Les

Yes i have the bloodline part sorted thanks for that.

Do you know a way to create two pass codes for each side of the family tree? One for my dads side if the tree and the other for my mums side of the tree. In that way my dads family cannot access my mums side of the tree.

Also I have seen Alan Scotts home page really impressive, hes got pictures, photo and links in the middle of his home page(paring "Useful Links" box). Would like to know how to do trhat...if you know if any link that'll be great...:)

What do I say about this site. I have not been through it thoroughly as yet but have read enough to be very impressed. However not for those that just want a simple site. If anyone takes it on and to get the best from it you need to have a knowledge of how to set it up with html and a web service program provider. I feel that it may need far more knowledge to set it up to its best advantage and potential than is needed for Tribalpages, or, at least as much. Must be a serious competitor to T/P for anyone who has the knowledge and is prepared to spend the time to make use of all features. It is worth looking at this site but don't expect to be able to assess it rapidly. Go to the demo site and check it out and click on all headings and spend a considerable amount of time looking at all aspects. Read up all you can before making a decision. Have a look at its user sites by clicking on that heading on its home page.

Too early for me to say if I personally think it is better than T/P. Both sites are what the tree owner makes out of them. I will not change from T/P at present but T/P now has a serious competitor for anyone wishing to set up their own home page as well as having all the other features of T/P such as music, videos, links, photo's etc. I think it is possible to include films but I need to check that out to make sure.

Unlike Tribalpages anyone taking it on will need to install a web server program. Make sure you click on the FAQ's heading and read. Not a site for the faint hearted. It could be a challenge for some. Being in my late seventies and a late starter to the computer age I am in no hurry to change.

Just one other thing I have to say is that I had a query regarding photographs and sent a message and had a reply within 15 minutes. How is that for service. Brilliant.

I agree with all you say Alan but I think I am going to give it a whirl anyway. I have been to their suggested web hoster's site and it seems easy enough to choose your domain name. They will also set up the software for you as well, after you have downloaded it, (for free) so there seem to be plenty of helping hands. Here is the link to their Forum pages in case you didn't find it.

Like you, I'm in the third age too, but whereas technology is a put off for many in our age bracket, I find it fascinating what you can make computers do and am always eager to stretch my knowledge boundaries.

Hi Robert,

I wish you well with your new site and will be interested to read your comments at a later stage. Nice to know that there is another Family History program available with similar capabilities to Tribalpages. Howerver from my own point of view I don't see any good reason to change from Tribalpages at present. That would be change for changes sake. I have no real problems with Tribalpages myself other than commercial messages in Forum. That does not adversely affect my tree in T/P so I can put up with that. It is T/P themselves that should be more concerned as they are allowing their site to be downgraded due to the SPAM. On the other hand if I do have problems with my T/P tree in the future that cannot be resolved it is nice to know that there is an alternative.

Just had a thought. I don't think I will look further at TNG at present to see if something similar can be done, but, one of T/P's features is your Home Page and deceased relative search in Google, MSN and Yahoo. Also T/P has its directory.

I have not been that impressed with the home pages of the various sites I have looked at in TNG. Sterile looking compared, for example, with Les's site. However maybe you can improve the design for your site. I did not see any nice background colours.

In saying this, don't feel that I am trying to put you off trying out TNG. It looks a very good program and if I was not happy with the way my own site in T/P was working, I would give TNG a try.

I thought I'd chime in on the discussion about TNG. I used it for a several years and it is a great piece of software. That being said one has to know code, html, etc. in order to update the site. I do not know code nor have the brain power at this stage of my life to learn it so I had to go to something simple like Tribal Pages. With TNG I ended up having to hire someone to update my website and tinker with it. It got too expensive. There are some REALLY, REALLY impressive sites there (Roger Moffat for one) but it wasn't a good fit for me.

Please report back. I will be anxious to hear how it goes!

Hi Judy, have you had a chance to look at my LINK, to sshoe how easy it is to customise your Tribal Pages.

Look at my HOME PAGE with SOUND ON

Have you seen what can be done with YOUR HOME PAGE and Links to Stories from Names add a persons special Music against their Name or Photograph

All so easy , and as you know using Tribal Pages is again so easy.

Hi Robert, ( Nice age group we are in )it looks a well constructed site, but I do not believe that it has the appeal of Tribal Pages.

There are too many Data Base boxes and Links that I believe would cause too much confusion. They are too similar to the ones that are used in the first teachings of how to compile a Data Base program.

I went to the WEDDING of one person, and it has again in DataBase format Links to the Venue and Guests.

In Tribal Pages we have STORIES and as I have suggested how easily this can be done, and more informally in my Most Requested HTML Link Below.

I am not trying to boost this, but I believe that Members would find this more appealing and easier to use.

As you know our main concern is the amount of Advertising on the FORUMS, which in no way affects the workings of our sites on Tribal Pages.

It is nice to know about other Programs, but I do not belive that this is the issue.
