Hi Edward I believe Roger means Splitting One tree into many.

Roger you will have to do this offsite, on a Family Tree program. Looks like you will have to do this individually.

All the best

Hi Roger,

You can split family trees. I suspect that most genealogy programs will allow this. I have several versions of "Family Tree Maker" and each of them support this method.

Have your large Master file in a genealogy program on your computer. Decide then which person in your file will be the root of a kinship list or group for the new file. (The new file will have all their kin.)

If you do not want your chosen root persons spouse or spouses kin in the new file then add a temporary person as a sibling to the chosen root person.

Make the new temporary person the root person when doing the kinship report. You can later remove the temporary person from your master file and also the new file you have created.

Now, with the root person selected, do the kinship report. Next go to file in the top left area and choose to Export as new tree. (In the my older version I choose Copy/Export Individuals.) There is another choice in my older version also that has Copy/Export Family file. That would be to copy my entire Master file. I do not choose that one.

You will then be provided with a place to name your new tree and you can choose the folder that you want it in.

Be sure to remove the temporary person from both files before extracting another group file or tree.

After each new file is complete be sure to also save it as a gedcom file for uploading to Tribalpages.

After that, you can choose anther root person for your next new file or tree to make from your master. The master can be stored away or published as you wish.

Have a good day,

Glenn Stewart

Les,

My preferred program that I am using is: "Family Tree Maker Ver. 11". (Several years old)

I also have a newer version: "Family Tree Maker ver.2011" on which I also tried the process to success.

Only bought the ver.2011 to test it for seeing if I liked it.
