Within "Stories", I can create a link to the site with href and the URL.
However, when I add the address to the URL bar within "Source Edit", the link fails while in "family member" view mode. It fails because the Tribal pages program auto fills my url with http:// at the beginning.
So, if I enter a URL of https://www.some_external_site.com, the link appears as http://https://www.some_external_site.com and fails.
Deleting the https:// part of my URL does not work no does trying to do so with href work.
There may be no solution. If, in the future, the pre-filled http:// could be eliminated without harm to existing links, that would be helpful.
If there IS a solution, I'm all ears.
Thank you,
Bill F.
(A very satisfied TP user regardless)
I found, though, that the https:// site (in this case Google Sites) responds just as well to the http:// address.
(Although you indicated that this doesn't work for you.)
(I'm sending the same message to each of you as i don't know if a reply to just Les or to just David or to just myself notifies any of the others.)
Thanks to your suggestions that I should experiment, I did and found a non https related issue.
Within Sources, I choose a source to edit so that I could paste in a URL to the external location. But, BUT, the URL field truncates that address to about 100 characters, thus rendering the link of no use, regardless of whether it is preceded by either http or https.
Here is a sample, but pseudo, link to experiment with:
https://sites.google.com/site/somesiteontheweb/1910%20Gagne%20Census%20Adelle%20Head%20ACharacter99Character100CharacterCharacter101/ans/so/on/and/on
Try editing one of your own source URL's by cutting and pasting the above address into the URL Field. Then use the right arrow to get to the end of the field. If you get the same result as me, you should get to the letter 'C' that follows the section, '20ACharacter99' but no further - the rest of the address is missing, at least in my case.
Don't for get to cancel your update!
Thanks to each of you for looking into this with me.
Bill
https://www.some_external_site.com
Just enter from the www
www.some_external_site.com
Please let me know how you get on

Yes I know about this. Secondly there are a few places in TP that you cannot use the full URL address.
Try this. Truncate the URL with this site ( there are a few others )
http://tinyurl.com/ and use the truncated URLLet me know how you get on
All the best

As I indicated, your suggestion does not work, but only because Tribal Pages, within the Sources portion of the site, does two things: It truncates a long address to 100 characters. In addition, it deletes the percent sign, %, within a url. (The percent sign is part of a system to add different meaning to certain characters).
I tried for a long time to find work arounds but to no avail.
Next I tried your very good idea about converting a l-o-n-g url to a short form via tiny url.com. It works!
There are some drawbacks according to the internet but for my purposes, this method will work. Actually, I switched to the Google URL shortener, goo.gl (type it in as if it were a web address/url) as I felt it might be slightly better because it points to my external site which is a Google site.
So, thanks to you, (and David) for helping to achieve a solution.
Bill
Could not understand why dropping the HTTP, did not work, but must admit I did not take the long address into account,as although I was suggesting the truncating,I forgot to mention, that there is no need to do this if address is short, but just drop the HTTP.
Yes Google URL shortener is great but with so many changes with IE and Windows, they are asking you to sign in,
Once again glad it is solved
