After having looked at my kinship report I would take "UP" as meaning from a higher generation. That's how it appears to me. All my "UP's" are from an older generation.
Wikipedia have a good chart showing relationships. (see link below). The full Wikipedia article is worth reading.

The link is working fine when I check in "Preview" but not after it appears in Forum. Just copy the Wikipedia link and paste into Google search . It does work that way.
