I've created a new site for my stepdad, who is going to take it over; however, in sending out invitations, after typing the person's name and address and sending, it arrived showing my email address and a friend's name! This was a friend who visited one time about two years ago on my defunct site. Yikes! I checked the address book on the site, and it does not show her listed, nor should it, as she's never been on or been invited to my stepdad's site. I'm worried that when he fully takes over and attempts to invite friends, his mail might go out with her name instead of his. I clicked all over the site looking for anything in my account settings that might be causing this, and I don't see anything. Please help as this is rather embarrassing! My first invite went out to someone showing my email address and a friend of mine's name, which is really weird and confusing for other people, who might wonder why I did such a thing. I've sent you emails as well with screen captures of what is happening. Thanks for your help!

I just transferred my stepdad's site to him, which it seemed to go well. Then I went back to my own site and did a test invite again, and now it looks like my stepdad, using my email, invited me to my own site. It seems to be confusing the sender for some reason, even when I'm logged in as the administrator. Is there some way I can correct this from happening?

When you send an invitation, the system looks up the email address in it's list of members and uses the name of that person instead of the one on your family tree. If the email does not exist in our member list, a new member with that email and the name from your family tree is created and the invitation is sent out.

Lets take an example. Say you have a John Smith in your family tree. His email is johnsmith@nomail.com. When you send an invitation to John, if his email does not exist in our members database, a new entry is created and an invitation is sent out. Now when John gets his invitation he creates his own password and manages his account. He can change his name to Johnathan Smith, but he will still be John Smith in your family tree. If you create another family tree and have the name Johnny Smith and send an invitation to johnsmith@nomail.com, it will address him as Johnathan Smith. The name on your family tree is irrelevant when sending an invitation to an existing member.

Hope this helps.

Does this mean that if I send an invitation to someone and he/she changes their name unknown to me, and puts in their own password, that I cannot delete them from being a member of my site ???.

Please answer this. It is important because some members, for whatever reason, may wish to stop a person having full access to their tree. Do we have to use the exact name in your members site to cancel a membership to a tree.

Would you tell us in this forum how we can be certain that we have completely canceled a persons membership to our site so that they don't have access to restricted data.

This has come up on other occasions over the years and I don't think I have ever seen a satisfactory answer.

When you delete an invitation, that email address cannot visit your site.

Thanks for the quick answer. Appreciated. Nice to know, for certain, that we can stop someone accessing restricted information, if that is ever necessary.
