At approximately 8am (USA Eastern Standard Time) we had a catastrophic failure of one of our servers that hosted images and photos. As a result family trees on tribalpages lost access to any pictures that were uploaded before June 2013. Our technical staff has been working around the clock to restore access to the photos. We are very sorry to have caused this inconvenience, but access to your photos will be restored over the next few days. We have not lost any photos or images.

Thank goodness they have not gone for ever as I've been adding to my pages since 2008. Hopefully you will be able to restore them soon.

Thanks for updating me.

I have mentioned repeatedly to Members and to others, that NEVER NEVER upload Photographs and other items to ANY INTERNET SITE, unless you keep the ORIGINALS safely on your PC or other places. You should always keep BACKUPS of your material.

Here is an instance that admittedly Tribal Support are doing their best, but there are lots of MEMBERS such as myself that have been on TP since 2003. I have always kept my Originals safe off the INTERNET, but 2003 to 2010 is a lot for TS to do.

Hopefully they can do this, as our Family Trees will be in a mess..

While Les is right about keeping originals on your computer, we would like to reassure all members that none of the photos will be lost. We have backups of everything. We also have backups of the backups stored off site. We are restoring access to all your pictures but it is taking a bit longer than originally anticipated.

We are working backwards in time, restoring access to more recent pictures first. Currently we have restored all pictures till October 2010. We still have a few more years to go. Should be done in 48 hours. We will keep you updated on our progress.

Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for your prompt answer, but as you can see i do not doubt you.

It was primarily for Members who do not keep their originals

Case in point below from a MEMBER

Also members are using a type of CLOUD to keep their items in.

Here in GB we are constantly seeing in our Newspapers that these are easily hacked, and Persons of some note, are being blackmailed. This only goes to show that the INTERNET is not safe for storage,

Thank you Tribal Support for all your GOOD WORK over the years.

Yes, I do have the originals of most of the photographs and documents but it would be a major undertaking to put them all back on again. But they have said they will be able to restore them so thats ok!! Phew!!

g'day les,

is there an easy way to save our pictures/files within TP? the pictures aren't actually retrievable from the GEDCOM file, which to me means if you ever have to upload the GEDCOM you will need to search out all your attachments

going to be a big job for us

Hi Len normally if you add a modified GEDCOM to your site, it will ovwewrite but the photographs find their own position as previously.

If you mean how to download the photographs from TP to your own PC it is relatively easy. If this is what you want to do let me know

Thank you very much indeed for your continued reassurances and updates on the restoration of the lost photos. This must be a mammoth task. I applaud your team for employing their expertise in restoring everyone's sites - no matter how long it takes, it will be worth waiting for. Thank you.

So relieved to hear that you are working to restore the photos & images of proof which I have been adding to my website since 2004. Many of them are missing at the moment.

I did write to you earlier today regarding my disappointment (before seeing your message) via your 'Contact us' link... It would be impossible to access them again and no doubt it would take months to sort out those proofs & photos again... So I thank you for your expertise and hope to see my images again at your earliest convenience.

Fortunately I have bought Custom USB Flash Drives & DVDs in the past - so could possibly download or do screen shots from one of those sources.

All my photo's now appear to be showing other than some on the home page. That's due to Photobucket being down for maintenance. Not a Tribalpages problem.

You fixed your problem quicker than expected. Well done.
