Backing up photos

As we know TribalPages does not backup photos, and there have been several posts about how to do this on the Forum. Well, I have embarked on a salvage mission to download them onto my own computer. A laborious and tedious process.

To individually “save image as” is the most sure-fire way of getting an image file out of TP onto your own computer into a file/folder of your own choice. BUT be aware that for each photo, TP has its own file name (e.g. mytribalpagesname_7437503) - so that needs to be changed to something more relevant and recognisable, before it lands on your computer.

AND all the valuable metadata you have entered into TP ( photo caption, names, description, date, etc.) is lost! (As with links to stories, tagging, date uploaded). So much of this needs to be re-entered, when it is on your own computer.

I only have 1,000 photos to backup. So I pity the Premium TribalPages punter with 10,000 photos.

Instead of individually “save image as” there IS a bulk download option. I have Windows using Chrome, and there is a Chrome extension. Google “Image Downloader” to find out more about it and how to install it. It’s a bit crude and with a learning curve, and a few practice runs. Let me give you some tips.

First, ensure that your TP “Albums” are in a healthy state. Remember you can set up as many as you like. Many smaller albums are better than a few big ones. Instead of having one big album of say “Jones”, you might consider “Jones - C.F”; “Jones - P.K.”; “Jones - N.L”; “Jones - headstones”; “Jones - documents”; etc. (Unfortunately TP does not offer hierarchies). Check that every image is “moved” to the most appropriate album. This can be a bit of a problem if you have many individuals in one photo, belonging to a variety of families, each with their own album).

Image Downloader only downloads whatever images it sees on the currently displayed page. TribalPages display only 30 images per page in its Albums. So, if you have 271 photos in an album, you’ll have to run Image Downloader 10 times. (Do the maths for 10,000 photos!)

Before each downloading, you need to be careful to check the settings of the Image Downloader parameters (almost hidden at the bottom of the box) viz. “Save to subfolder” and “Rename files”. If you name a subfolder “TribalPages Photos - Smith, Mick” (this should reflect the TP Album name, e.g. “Smith, Mick”), the download will end up in “Downloads” in the folder ““TribalPages Photos - Smith, Mick”. Consider “Downloads” on your computer as a temporary working area. . . .
