When to stop adding people?

When should I stop adding people to my tree? Part of me wants to add every name I find. The other part wants to keep some kind of focus on actual family, not the "wife of uncle of husband of niece of husband of step 2nd cousin wife of 3rd cousin 1x removed". Yes, I found that person.

I know there is no rule, but where is a good place to draw the line? Something like aunts, uncles and all of the distant cousins and spouses. Not following the clues form the spouses that might lead to the above person.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Ron;

I ran into the same conundrum on my Ancestry site. You keep getting these hints that keep expanding the tree. After a while you ask yourself ‘do I really need to know about these people’, but you keep going because you used to know nothing about your family.

(Actually found out I'm related to Winston Churchill by marriage.)

What you might do here on Tribal, is start another tree with just your direct line on your Mother and Fathers line. Just follow the paternal line on both sides, just showing the wives and not expanding on their families.

A day of events has been held in London to mark the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's funeral.

The boat that carried the former prime minister's coffin along the Thames in 1965 repeated the journey, with members of his family among those on board.

Hi Ron, have you used FAMILY LINES. This will then show you the relationships and if you see any that you decide are not for your site just DELETE.

I would save the GEDCON first, to a FOLDER of your choice,on your PC, then you still have the fruits of your earlier work.

After using FAMILY LINES and using as many colours as you wish. Go to EDIT and select PEOPLE --NAME INDEX-- and in the middle of the row you will see BASIC. Select this.

You will see all your NAMES and one or more coloured indicators on the left.

Go through the list, and those without an indicator, you now can decide if they are relevent to your requirments. If not DELETE . As you will have saved your Original Gedcom. you can still refer back to it, possibly by Uploading it as a FREE tree in Tribal Pages.

All the best

Hi Ron,

We can give you our thoughts but only you should decide what to do for your own tree. It is your tree to do as you see fit. I have no firm policy myself, other than I don't like name gathering just for the sake of building up the greatest possible number. I generally stick to the main branches but expand out sometimes if there is someone of particular interest. Then the are situations where family members wish to add names of persons who are not a blood relation of me or my wife. I don't mind that as long as it does not get out of hand. For some I have not added family of second or third cousins but in the notes just stated, for example, 10 children, information available ex FamilySearch.

As you are doing all the work, keep the tree interesting for yourself. How you do this is over to you. Hope these comments help.

Thanks all for your advice. It helps quite a bit. As long as I don't get sidetracked (again) I am going to try and keep things a little more focused.

At one time I thought of stopping at 50,000 names, then for some reason I decided to continue and because I kept on I found that my wife was my 9th Cousin. I would not have found this out if I had stopped at 50k.
