I have hit a brick wall. I am researching a Frances Mary Garbett, born 14 November 1872, daughter of Joseph Garbett and Elizabeth Nuttall of Walsall, Staffordshire. She married in Walsall, December 1894, either Samuel Davis or John Foster. Free BDM and Family Search only show whose names were on the paperwork, not who married who. I live in New Zealand and haven't got access to the 'real' records, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the 1911 census, living at 30 Hereford Street, Walsall, there is a 38 year old Frances Mary Davis, born Rushall, Staffs., with husband Samuel, 42, 3 children and mother Eliza Davis.

Thanks for that - I'll follow it up.

I must have the wrong website. 'Find My Past' 1911 census results show 2 Samuel Garbetts living in Walsall - one was born in Birmingham in 1860 who's wife's name is Mary and a 20 year old daughter, Emily; the other was born in Walsall in 1874, but his wife is Barbara with 5 children. Where did you find your reference, which sounds right?

Your request was to trace the husband of Frances Mary Garbett from the two possibles available with the same GRO marriage index number. The usual way to solve this, which I used, is to find possibles for her on a later census under one of those possible surnames. One of those surnames was DAVIS and there was a Francis (sic) Mary Davis living in 1911 at 30 Hereford Street, Walsall of the same age and born in the same parish as your Frances Mary Garbett. In 1901 this same family were at 74 Lewis Street but the wife is listed as Fanny Davis. I do not use Find My Past but a different transcription provided by 'The Genealogist which enables searches to be made by any name, place, age, address, occupation etc.

I suggest that you enter the surname DAVIS in your search engine and not Garbett.
