This forum deals with queries from all round the globe, it would therefore be useful if you could tell us in which country your family lived and if possible the state/county,city/town etc. For instance there were 9 Doris Thornley births registered in England alone in 1906+/-2 years

In 1911 a Doris Thornley age 5 is living at 325 Dukenfield Road, Newton Hyde, Cheshire, with parents John Andrew Thornley 31 a Grocer (Dealer), born Derbyshire and Matilda Thornley, age 30, born Hyde, Cheshire. Doris is said to be born in Manchester. There are a number of possible birth registrations for Doris Thornley around the Manchester area the most probable are all in March 1906, two in the Prestwich district GRO reference 8d,355 and 8d, 382 and one in Oldham, 8d, 686. According to the census Doris was the only child to this couple up to that date.

There was another birth registration in Prestwich district in September 1918 of a Josiah Thornley who had a mother with the maiden name of Denton, who could be a brother. Again there are a number of marriages for Doris Thornley around Manchester but only two were in the Ashton under Lyne district which is where Hyde is situated. These were in March 1919 where the bridegrooms name was Harry Holt, although your Doris was probably too young for that and another in September 1945, 8d, 1732, with a bridegroom Roy Notman, but this time she would have been rather old. She could have married outside the district, however I cannot see any children born to the latter couple, which would probably be the case should she have been that bride.

I can only suggest that you purchase a copy of the latter marriage certificate, which will tell you if it is the correct person from the father's name.
