Hello and Good morning.

I am looking for information on my great great grandmother.

This is the info I have on her

Name: Elizabeth Hopwood

Born: 1840 in Cannore, Madras, India

Died: 13 June 1904 Place unknown

Her father was in the 25th Foot Rgmt Ref: N2/95

I was wondering if someone could give me a little more information on her who she married, who her children were and who her parents were.

Many thanks for any help that you can give me.

Best regards

Colleen.

Her birth is recorded at the General Register Office (GRO) in the overseas births, Cannamore (Kannur), 1840, Volume 1260, page 23. I suggest that you purchase a copy of the certificate direct from the GRO, which should give the names of her parents, including her mother's maiden name.

Oddly there is also a birth registration for an Elizabeth Hopwood in Belgaum, India (Belagavi, Karnataka), 1840, father also in the 25th Foot, Vol.1260, page 42. It would seem rather a large coincidence if there were two possibles in the same regiment, I assume that this relates to the same Elizabeth, but may not. I also assume that you have information to confirm that yours was definitely the other one, if there were two.

I cannot see a marriage in the overseas register, so it is not possible to identify her marriage without more information. You do though have a precise date of death, so do you know what her surname was at that time, if so it may be possible to identify a possible marriage or a copy of the death certificate may assist.

Hi Robsur

Many thanks for your time and trouble to reply to me.

I also have the two Elizabeths that you mention and where I am in the dilema of which one belongs to me. Will try and do what you suggest and get her birth certificate. Do you think I should ask for both birth certificates?

Your help is much appreciated

Regards

Colleen

As you are not certain which one is yours then it would be sensible to purchase both certificates, although that will of course mean paying twice. The hope is that they do relate to the same person, because if not you will have a massive problem to decide which is correct, but at least you will have the facts.
