Hi Les, Hope you're well. I'm good and really enjoying the Tribal setup.

Place names consistency? Ir's easy for a lot of us (well, for me anyway) to re-enter the same place name but not taking note of consistency in word arrangement, punctuation and spaces, resulting in the same place name showing up in more than one format. Don't we all like to have consistency?

Wouldn't it be nice for the Tribal program to bring up all place names in alphabetical order as a check list? Then one could go down that list and see same place names presumably together (unless one has entered a place name in an entirely different way) and a way then to make the stray place names match up to the one preferred and "correct" format.

Just an idea that could enhance the already excellent system. Take care now.

Hi Bruce, as you know I am just a member as you are, so it is not up to me.

Have you given any thought to the list of Place Names?. It would have to be for every known place in the World,as TP does not just cover the English speaking countries.

My opinion is that as Tribal Pages is a Family Tree site, for all users, that your suggestion seems more pedantical, than for consistency.

Why would we want such a list, as we all do our Trees to suit ourselves, and we put the place names , as we know them?.

If you want to check your own site, why not make your own List with Search Radio Button.

Regards

Les

Hwllo again! Sorry that I was misunderstood. But first, being "pedantic" as you label me means a person who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning, and that my friend was a low blow. Then you asked, “Why would we want such a list as we all do our Trees to suit ourselves. and we put the place names as we know them?”

That was precisely my point, Les. I create my OWN place names to suit ME, but over the course of time, many of MY place names, when repeated, can stray from MY original format with a spelling error, a missing comma or space, and even the arrangement of words within a place name can change. I do not want that impossible list, as you suggested two times, of every place name that exists in the world to check or compare MY place names. I'm not so dense.

Tribal invites new ideas, so like their automatic List of Names - a list of existing names in my family tree, so why not the possibility of a List of PLACE Names - the place names throughout my family tree that I created for MY events, etc?. Then I can check for "consistency" of MY place names. I'm suggesting this idea for not just poor me but for everyone - for the benefit of all.

I entered this idea into the Tribal "Feature Request" as an idea for the technical staff to consider. not you, although I addressed you. Your request to them last week was promptly answered by them, but they are not so prompt with the general membership. I thought going via you would be the best way to reach them. So please, pass my idea along to the technical people; let them decide whether or not it is something worthwhile adding to the program. Thanks.

This is one of the reasons I use gedcom loads to update my site. My in house family tree program does keep a list of the place names I have used so when I type in - it makes suggestions. Of course I think it 'hooks in to one of the internet mapping sites because it will also geocode and offer what is the current name of the place. This is a nuisance when one wants to use the year appropriate Place name.

But 0 I edit off site, I do not find the TP drop down lists particularly easy to find names on as they are often truncated - places could be even more difficult unless the dropdown had provision to show the place in its entirety - such as Weyawega, Waupaca, WIsconsin, United States or Evangelisch, Rostock, Mechlenburg-Vorpommern, Germany And these are some of my shorter ones

Hi Bruce, yes you addressed this to me, and I gave you my answer. I am not a short cut to Tribal Support, as you have suggested.

I do not come onto the site to be in an argument, but to try to help, but if you have taken exception to the "Pedant"

that is up to you. Remember the (e) in Marriage a few days ago.

"Marie" has given you an answer, that I am sure explains, that we have the ways and means to look after our own sites, on some issues.

Surely if you are the only one looking after your site, you can enter Place names , consistenty.

Try this one that is in my site

Bruce, you stated the following :-

"Your request to them last week was promptly answered by them, but they are not so prompt with the general membership"

implying that somehow I have been answered before other members

For your information, as I have pointed out to you previously, I am just a member, and I am not treated any differently as other members.

If you would take your time, and read entries in Tribal Pages correctly, and also in the Forum, you will see that I did not put anything into the FEATURE REQUEST FORUM , but into the TECHNICAL FORUM, pointing out to Tribal Support that something had gone wrong with their program .
