Why aren't there any MILITARY events to choose from in the EVENTS drop-down? Such as service in WARS; i.e. CIVIL WAR VETERAN, WORLD WAR I VETERAN, etc. and also MEDALS received; i.e. PURPLE HEART, BRONZE STAR, etc.

Also, when you put in a DEATH DATE, why can't a BURIAL event automatically appear for cemetery information input? If the email line can automatically disappear when you check that someone is not alive, why can't a line automatically appear for cemetery information?

Hi Beverly, if you look more closely you will see a DEATHE EVENTS NOTES is there for you to use. It is at the end of DEATH -PLACE FIELDS.

As far as your request for

**********************

Such as service in WARS; i.e. CIVIL WAR VETERAN, WORLD WAR I VETERAN, etc. and also MEDALS received; i.e. PURPLE HEART, BRONZE STAR, etc.

**********************

Surely you realise that there are so many that these cannot be itemised, that is why again, if you look more closely

there is a facility for making any or all by using CUSTOM ( FREE SITE numbers Limited)

Hope that you can now enter what you require

I wasn't meaning if they were KIA in a war. I was meaning recognizing a person that has served. Then to use the description and notes for more information.

I was saying that it would be nice if BURIAL would automatically appear when a death year is input. Sometimes there are just to many keystrokes!!

I support Beverley's point that there should be a standard event "Military".

Yes, you can get around this by defining a custom event (see Tools/Settings) which seems fine - on "Add an event" the custom events appear at the top of the list, and on the sources page you can select "Military". And the event appears on that person's page as "e. Military". But have a look at the resulting citation at the bottom of the page. Instead of "Military Citation" we get "CUSxx Citation" (where xx is the position of the custom event in the custom event list). This is not very edifying to the puzzled reader. It is obviously a programming mistake (i.e. what some apologists quaintly describe as a "glitch").

The customised event now is correctly displayed in Reports, "Other events in the life of yyyy" although be aware that any event is only displayed in reports if the person is dead, or has had children.

The 33 events on offer n the drop down menu by TP is a very small selection of the available 133 events defined in the GEDCOM 5.5 specification. But interestingly that standard does not include "Military". (Be aware that there are enormous ongoing squabbles about GEDCOM by the various players in the genealogy software industry. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEDCOM)

Other genealogy software such as Family Tree Maker use their own customised events with a GEDCOM tag such as _MILT and TP could, too, when they eventually revamp their standard events list.

While we are talking about Events, I fail to understand why we are restricted to only one event of the same type. For example, I would like to add several Census entries. each with their own date. I get around this by adding one event "Census". Then in the citations page I can add as many citations as I like against "Census", each with a different source, which then appear at the bottom of that person's page. I'm not sure how how this translates into a GED file entry, though!

So Beverley - if you have several sub-events under "Military", you could create a custom event "Military", then enter a separate citation for each of them, showing the source. Unfortunately, until the "glitch" is fixed they will each be cited at the bottom of the person's page as "CUSxx" ...

Oh, I forget to mention above that all the info you put into the citation entry, doesn't appear on reports. However, info you put into the event's "Notes" (click the small page icon on the right end of the event line) does appear in the reports. Be aware that the number of characters allowed in "Notes" is limited.

David, thank you.

I have created several events of my own which allow me to add the event, description and notes. I have CIVIL WAR VETERAN, WORLD WAR I VETERAN, WORLD WAR II VETERAN, KOREAN WAR VETERAN AND VIETNAM WAR VETERAN. Since I'm only working on family information up to 1990 those are the only wars necessary at this time.

I feel these are events that tribal pages should already acknowledge in their events. There are several events as a default that just seem unnecessary and not as useful as military ones would be.

I also wish that the BURIAL would automatically appear when someone's death date is input. Sometimes it feels like there are just too many unnecessary keystrokes. I'm working on one family tree that I have already input over 10,000 names and it gets monotonous after awhile and you come up with a "wish list" of keystrokes!
