Berthon from Chatellerault, Poitou, France

Rev Edward Lyon Berthon M.A. and Inventor of the Berthon Collapsible Boat, says " My family is decended from the ' haute nobless' of France. MY Fathers great grandfather St Pol le Berthon was the only son of the Heguenot Marquis de Chatellerault who survived the massacre that followed the revocation of the edits of Nantes in A.D. 1685. He escaped to Bordeaux and eventually Lisbon". Samuel Smiles Book 'The Huguenots in France' is a must read for the 'Catholic Concentration Camp' that France became and the horrors therein.

Raymond Tinne Berthon who undertook what seems a lifetimes research into the Berthon and related families, has much documentation deposited with the SOG in London, snippetts of I have accessed via the web. He also compiled a Berthon Pedigree, a copy of which I obtained, I also photocopied 42 Pages of his Pedigree 'notes' and consulted items held at the Huguenot Society,London. It is evident that he spent a lot of time 'trawling the Archives in France.

Some descendants fled to Amsterdam, Married Dutch, then Married into German Royalty, then married into Russian Royalty, across these vast German and Russian Empires an individual may be known by 5 names in 5 different Countries and in 5 different languages, makes tracing them much fun.

The Geneanet website has been an endless source of individuals and transcribed documents.

C'est avec plaisir que je fais bon accueil à des contributions des descendants du Berthons français.

Ik stem in ook met bijdragen van familieverbindingen van de takken van Amsterdam. -
