About Brinsdon One Name Study
This is a website containing the worldwide research I am undertaking on the surnames BRINSDON, BRINSDEN, BRUNSDON, BRUNSDEN, BRUMSDON, BRUMSDEN, BRONSDON, BRONSDEN, BRIMSDON and BRIMSDON as part of the Guild of One Name Studies (www.one-name.org).

My goal is that the information on this website is as accurate as possible. If you have any corrections/ updates please let me know. I try to update this website (from a master database held on my computer) at least once a week. My email address is brinsdon@one-name.org; I can also be contacted through this page (by pressing "contact the administrator of this site"), or by leaving an entry in the Guest Book (please also include your email address with Guest Book entries if you would like a reply).

I will be delighted to publish photographs, certificates, newspaper clippings etc related to people researched on this site. Please email them to me at brinsdon@one-name.org.

BACKGROUND

My interest in this surname was sparked in 2001 by trying to find out more about my 2 x great grandfather Edward Rutty Brinsdon. He was born in Devizes, Wiltshire, England in 1843, the son of John Brinsdon and Susannah Brinsdon nee Rutty. Edward Rutty Brinsdon married Ellen Jane Painter in 1865 and in 1874 they emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand. They had 8 children, the youngest being my great-grandmother Esther and her twin Thomas who were born in 1881. (Sadly Thomas died at 4 weeks). Esther married William Williamson in 1902 and their daughter Isabella (Belle) Williamson (who married Ian Dow) was my paternal grandmother.

Today Edward Rutty and Ellen Jane Brinsdon's descendants are now spread throughout New Zealand. As far as I have been able to determine, all Brinsdon's in New Zealand are related.

STUDY TO DATE

Firstly, I would like to thank all those fellow researchers who have shared information on their families. As far as data collection goes, I have gathered most the births, marriages and deaths from the English records from 1837, as well as most of the census references (some still elude me). Through Ancestry.com I have started gathering American, Canadian and Australian references to the name. I believe that I have most of the references to Brinsdon in New Zealand but any additional sightings are most welcome. I have now also started work on New Zealand references to Brinsden/Brimsden/Brunsdon/ Brunsden.

September 2009 - TribalPages had added the facility of colour coding family lines. I have colour coded the Edward Rutty Brinsdon line and a couple of others. I will add further lines as they become clear.

October 2009 - an amazing amount of new information is now available online in the form of London parish certificates (Ancestry) and the 1911 England and Wales census (FindMyPast). This has helped tremendously in working out family groupings.

January 2013 - my efforts are currently focused on finding newspaper clippings and certificates to add to the site. All contributions are welcomed. Please send to brinsdon@one-name.org.

2014 - Marilyn Astle, a fellow member of the Guild of One-Name Studies, has registered the name BRINSTON to research. She has set up a BRINSTON Y-DNA project which includes the following the surnames as variations BRINSTON, BRINSDEN, BRINSDON, BRINSON. Marilyn would be pleased to hear from any males who have these surnames. She may be contacted on brinston@one-name.org (updated June 2023)

Jan 2015 - Happy New Year to all my fellow researchers. This holiday period I have been working my way through the recently published England and Wales probate listings and also have taken out a subscription to Deceased Online so my database should reflect more accurate death dates. A goal for this year is also to upload as many baptism records, marriage certificates and burial records to the website as possible.

Jan 2017 - with the publication of the updated England and Wales GRO indexes showing the mother's maiden name, I have taken the opportunity to refresh my research from this area. Ultimately this website will show the updated database, but in the meantime, researchers may wish to look at my other website on TribalPages - http://chris53.tribalpages.com/ which shows the work to date.

April 2021 - an exciting find. William Brunsdon (1852-1934) was the Kennel Keeper for the royal household in Sandringham. The baptism record for his and wife Mary Jane Wells daughter Jane, has an interesting baptism on the adjoining page - the future King George VI. His parents were the Duke and Duchess of York. The Sandringham parish records also include a number of other royal baptisms.
