About The Canino Family
The Canino family has a long and proud history beginning in ancient times. As best as I can determine, the Canino family began in central Italy during the time of the Etruscans. Over the centuries, the family has migrated southward to form the large populations found today all across Italy and the world. The civil war in Corsica between the former Genovese ruling class and the French may have been the single greatest influence on the early spread of the Canino family to Latin America and the Phillipines beginning with the great patriarch of that branch of the family, Antonio Canino. Emigration to the United States began in the 18th century largely to the areas of New Orleans, Chicago, Denver, and New York.
Today there are many Caninos that have made valuable contributions and accomplished great things. There is Bruno Canino, a world renowned pianist. There is Bonnie Canino, a world champion women's boxer. There have been the Canino Superette, the Canino Sausage Company, and the Canino's Italian Restaurant. There have been tailors, masons, farmers, mule drivers, and a thousand other trades. In every profession and every walk of life, there are Caninos!
There are several name variants which are included in this family tree which are believed to be of common ancestry with the Canino family. In Trapani, one finds Bannino. In Agrigento and Sicily, one finds Cimino. On some of the islands surrounding Sicily, particularly Ustica, one finds Cirino. Although different, all of these names are believed to be of the same ancient bloodline.
A quick word on the conventions used on this site:
- All women should be entered using their maiden names. If you do not know the
maiden name, please enter "Unknown" for the surname.
- For any individual that uses a compound surname, common among Spanish speaking
families, please use only the patronymic surname, ie. the father's last name. This is
in keeping with convention of the Italian beginnings of the family and makes it much
easier to search the tree for those who only have a little information.
- If you would like to add a link to a particular individual, please let me know by
e-mail here.
- Unless you are absolutely 100% certain that a particular entry contains some
factual inaccuracy, please do not change other people's work!
