About Canns of Devon, Guernsey & America
November 2023 It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Linda Blum- Barton in Greenville, Georgia last December. She was a valuable contributor and source for the many American descendants of William Honey Cann b1845, grandson of Samuel and Charity. She and her genealogical knowledge will be greatly missed.

Latest changes and additions;
July 2023; added photo of Priscilla E Duffet, uploaded GEDCOM file with new research from Priaulx Library and Island Archives, Guernsey, collected by Arlene Widdowfield March 2023

May 2022 Recent changes

Added 200+ ancestors of Eva and Oliver Cann who lived in Bavaria, back to 1400s, thanks to Franz Heil

 Summary of changes and additions
One of the few good things to come out of this Year of Pandemic is that lots of people suddenly had time to investigate or update their family trees.  So a HUGE Thank You to the following;

Linda Blum- Barton for updating all the American descendants of Samuel and Charity Cann

Arlene Widdowfield for updating and finding new ancestors in Devon, Cornwall, the Liverpool Kennys and Guernsey, and kicking off the DNA matches project

Ian Cann from New Zealand who has broken down the brick wall for George Cann b. 1829 and Margaretta Dorey b. 1830- now we know a lot more about their lives.

I wish all of you a peaceful Christmas and a healthy and fruitful New Year,

Bob Cann [Admin]

 Summary of changes and additions for last 2 years

1. Descendants of John Cann b. 1809 South Tawton, son of Samuel and Charity; Thanks to our distant cousin Linda Blum Barton, a descendant of John. The photo of John Cann taken sometime in the late 1880s is the oldest photo on this site. John moved to Topsham and married twice, his first marriage to Jane Hill in 1834 resulted in ten children. The oldest John Hill Samuel Cann [not the founder of the banking dynasty!] moved to London and married Mary Ann Mayhew in 1855, they had 4 children. Two of the other sons, William Honey Cann and Samuel E Cann emigrated to America in the 1860s, Linda is descended from William Honey Cann.

2. Descendants of James Cann b. 1820 Cocktree [farm?] near South Tawton, son of Samuel and Charity; married Sarah Millman in Brixham 1847; son Samuel was born in Brixham 1848 and they then moved to Guernsey, appearing in the 1851 census at St Sampsons. Three of James’ grandsons served in the Guernsey Light Infantry in WW1. Some of James’ descendants are believed to be living in the Bristol area; thanks to Maria Cann descendant by marriage.

3. Burial records of Canns at St Sampsons church, Guernsey which were thought to be lost when the graves slid into the adjacent quarry in the 1960s. Thanks to Susan Ilie, verger at St Sampsons and genealogist, for access to a previous verger’s notebook of gravestone inscriptions up to the 1930s. One of the recorded inscriptions is for Elizabeth Honey, born Arscott, thought to be Charity's sister.

4. My Gran Seabrook’s ancestors, the Duffets, back to William Duffet b. 1728. The Duffets were family butchers in Guernsey and for many years had a stall in the Meat Market. Thanks to Susan Ilie for the research and Martyn Seabrook for access.

5. My Cornish ancestors, parents of Mary Treneman who married William Arscott Cann in 1841. Mary’s father Martin Treneman b. 1789 at St Ives, and mother Ann Cradock b. 1791 also at St Ives.

6. My Irish ancestors; Lawrence Kenny b. 1859 and Annastasia Walsh b. 1868 in Waterford, both Great- Grandparents; and Annastasia’s parents Paul Walsh b. 1825 and Johannah Hanlon b. 1846 in Newmarket, Cork.

7. Emma Cann, born 1881 to John William and Emma in St Sampsons, sister of John William and Henry James Cann; Emma joined the St Sampsons Citadel of the Salvation Army in 1907 and served at Andover, Eastleigh, Faversham, Hythe and other Citadels until she retired a commander in 1935.
