Please sign in to see more. My name is Marilyn Barton (nee Cater) and I live in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. This site is dedicated to all my ancestors and contains details of the Cater, Davies and Hollingsworth families(paternal side) and the Kendall, Chambers and Nicholson families (maternal side).
Locations in my family history include, Herefordshire, Kent, Nottingham, Northumberland, Co. Durham, Peebleshire and Dumfries.
CATER Occupational name - 'buyer of' (Norman cf modern French 'acheter') so 'caterer, purveyor for a household'
KENDALL Locality name - derived from the town of Kendal in the Lake District and was so called from the River Ken, on which it is situated, and dale; the dale on the River Ken.
VERRIER Occupational name - maker of glass objects. Derived from the Latin 'vitrum' meaning glass. First used in England around Norman-French conquest of 1066.
NICHOLSON Patronymic, son of Nicol (people's victory). Of Norse descent perhaps from personal name Olsen, ´Nic´ in Gaelic signifying ´daughter of´. Could also be a corruption of Nicolassen. The Norse raided the coasts of Scotland, the north of England and the northern coast of France, whence came their Norman descendants. Nicolson clan bears a gold shield charged with red falcons.
HOLLINGSWORTH Locality name. One from Hollingworth (holly enclosure)
CHAMBERS Occupational name - denoted an official in charge of the private chambers of his master. French origin - keeper of a 'chambre', private chambers of royalty or nobility. From Old French 'cha(u)mbre' (room/chamber) and ultimately from the Latin 'camera'. Chalmers is the Scottish version of the name with links to the Scottish clan of Cameron.
