About 12 generations ago, in colonial Virginia in the 17th century, John Cotton married Ann White. A child, born c.1635, was named William White-Cotton. It has been said that this is the origin of our surname. This John Cotton was born in Devon England about 1615. His father and grandfather were named Edward and William Cotton, respectively.
(Following from Cheryl L Blevins: William Cotton b ca. 1560, Devon England married Mary Hulme b ca. 1561, Devon, England, begat a son, Edward Cotton b ca. 1586, Devon, England married Margaret Petre b ca. 1586, Devon, England on 02Feb1613 St Peter Cathedral (sic), Exeter, Devon, England. Edward & Margaret begat a son, John Cotton b. 04May1615, Devon, England. John traveled to America, Virgina, on the ship "George". John and Ann White b. 1616 married ca. 1634 and begat a son William White-Cotton b ca. 1636 Stafford, VA. William married (?)Isham b ca. 1637 and begat a son Isham Whitecotton b ca. 1660 VA, thus the one word name.)Note: Isham both female and male name per this account. Dates not in sync with my notes.
I`m excited to be working on tracing the line, expanding the circle, of our family. I`m always looking for more information. I welcome corrections where error exists. So far, the family line runs from England through Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee to Illinois. If indeed, the marriage of John and Anne marked the beginning of our name, we Whitecottons in America are perhaps all related. It would be good to hear from any Whitecottons anywhere. Thanks for visiting. Come again.
