About Syphers Family
7/11/22
Some current thoughts of mine about where Syphers came from.
I'm now thinking its probable that Cypher came to New York from Great Britain. That's based on my DNA result that claims 83% Great Britain. I initially figured that strong part was probably due to my mother's (Sterling) side. But if I consider that during the American Revolution our branch of Cypher were "Loyalists" that moved to New Brunswick since they sided with the king of England..... they would more likely have come from Great Britain than the Netherlands. And DNA testing is constantly improving and updating and might show some differences now. So....with that and the Sterling connection, the 83% seems to make more sense to me.
Having said that, the Dutch connection is likely but probably far in the past.
Just a thought and something to consider.....

Added GPS readings for gravestones in the Portsmouth, Greenland, Stratham, Hampton, Portland
areas for Syphers and Sterling graves I visited a while back. There are also other relatives
from same or adjacent sites. GPS readings (if available) can be found in the comments section
of gravestone photos.

As I originally said when I first started this site, some of this info was from other folks work
posted on Ancestry.com. Since checking more thoroughly, I've found that our Sterling / Starling line has a problem before Joseph Starling, born 1721. Some folks have used his mother as Abigail
Patchen but I and some others can't find verification of that. We find her children listed without
any mention of Joseph or any other linking data. So I'll leave what I had put originally but it may
 well be NOT accurate!

10/16/15 INTERESTING READING found under Josiah Starling Sr. (born 1762). Includes and account of
the original "modern" settlement and dividing of Monhegan Island and also an account of Josiah's
 service in the Revolutionary War!

9/7/15 LOOKS LIKE SYPHERS (CYPHER, SYFFER AND VARIATIONS) MORE LIKELY GERMAN. THIS IS BASED ON A
BOOK I JUST FOUND ONLINE. 2ND PARAGRAPH HAS WILLIAM (A DIRECT ANCESTER) AS BROTHER OF JOHANNIS. THERE IS INTERESTING READING INCLUDING ORIGIN OF THE NAME....TAKE A LOOK. https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE197619 A DEFINITE DUTCH CONNECTION IS THAT OF WILLIAM'S WIFE PETRONELLA STORM WHO WAS OF DUTCH ANCESTRY.
9/4/15 I FEEL QUITE SURE THAT THE SYPHERS LINE IS DUTCH. THE CHILDREN OF WILLIAM (1705-1763) FROM
NEW HACKENSACK, DUTCHESS COUNTY, NEW YORK WERE MEMBERS OF THE REFORMED DUTCH CHURCH OF NEW HACKENSACK....
Welcome to this site! This will be an ongoing effort at updating information by me, Dave Syphers. I
welcome any information or pictures that our family would like to correct or add to this site. You
may contact me via email at davidsyphers@gmail.com.
Currently I am keeping most editing capabilities to myself but may relax this sometime in the future. (However, family members who join the site may edit their immediate family) Hope you enjoy exploring the site....I am constantly adding to information. The oldest ancestors of the Sterling line are from other folks work. I'm not sure of some of it and
 will work towards verifying.
But it looks like the Syphers line comes from the Dutch and the Sterling line came from Scotland
and eventually to Monhegan Island, Maine.
Syphers came to New York but our part of the line left for New Brunswick, Canada as "Loyalists" (to
the King) when the Revolutionary war broke out. They later moved south to Maine and beyond.
