About The Australian Connection
This tree belongs to my children. Most of the branches have fallen from the trees of England, Wales and Ireland and have, for one reason or another, landed in Australia. There are many names here that have been left behind in the United Kingdom. While these names are not always direct ancestors, they are important none the less.
All my immediate family are Australian from the arrival of my first ancestor in 1830 and my last in 1921 at the very latest. Most of the research for my maternal and paternal families was discovered and complied by my mother in a time when using computers for family history was impossible. She has been able to trace every name back to the United Kingdom although we have been unable to find the actual date of arrival in Australia for some family members. My family in Australia are Abell, Baker, Horton, Jones, McCall, Richards, Rourke, Sirdefield, Thomas and Walsh. I am now continuing with my mother's extensive research to add detail to the family. All my husband's immediate family are Australian with the arrival of all his ancestors before 1858. My research into the Ison ancestry began in earnest in 2007 but was initially started in the 1980s. His Australian families are numerous. His paternal ancestry in NSW is Harry, Ison, Kelly, Leonard, Poole and Taylor. His maternal ancestors in Tasmania are Brown, Davis, Hunn, Rapp and Somers and in Victoria - Ashmore, Clarke, Cook and Hansen. Research is just beginning on his Tasmanian and Victorian families.
There are two confirmed convicts on my tree. They are William Horton, who was transported to NSW and Thomas (Bernard) McCall who was transported to VDL and moved to NSW once his sentence had expired. William Sirdefield, the brother of my great-great-great-great grandfather, was transported to NSW in 1818.
There are four confirmed convicts in my husband's ancestry - Mary Brown, John Davis and Mary Leonard. Mary Brown was transported to NSW and then transferred to VDL in 1815. John Davis was transported to VDL, almost certainly in 1812. Mary Leonard first arrived in NSW in 1833, returned to England, re-married and re-entered Australia in 1852. Her brother, John Leonard, was transported to VDL. Another Tasmanian ancestor, George Somers, probably received a Colonial Sentence. A further convict may exist in his great grandfather, John Kelly.
I look forward to hearing from you if you have a connection with any of these families so please contact me as I am very happy to share my sources and older photographs. For the family who visit, please check what I have written and make any corrections or connections to your immediate family. Please also make any corrections, suggestions or considerations by commenting in and signing the Guest Book.
