About Edwards/Mabe/Williams/Williby Families
This Tribal Pages site is mostly to honor my parents and family. Growing up they showed me by example the importance of family. And while most of the time I wasn't paying attention, it embedded itself in my core. My love for genealogy sprung from being drawn to old photos and history. It seemed only natural that all of that would combine into a love for family history. As humans we seek two things, to know from where we came and to know that we left something worthwhile behind. As genealogists we try to preserve those traces, usually to honor those we love. To us, if they are on these pages, they are never really gone. In doing so, the trace we ourselves leave is that others were here, and that's from where we came.

This page would not be possible without the tireless work of so many others before me. There is so much information available now, thanks to those nameless and faceless people. I also would like to thank those who have helped me with searches and information - Paula Rakes has come to my aide on many occasions as we've tracked down a missing ancestor - also those on the Carroll County Genealogy and Carroll County Memories Facebook pages. There are people on those pages with extraordinary genealogy experience and expertise, not to mention just really nice people.

That being said, this is a work in progress that is constantly updating. If you find any errors in the information I have, please let me know. I'm not infallible, and I'd prefer to have correct information. I also appreciate comments. Look around and enjoy!

Family Tree research is similar to a giant jigsaw puzzle that is never completely solved. So remember that this is always a work in progress.

Under useful links you'll find some of the places that I use heavily. Find A Grave is almost as good as getting to visit the grave site itself. I have included information from Find A Grave along with citations under the "More About" section. I find that easier to get to the information rather than putting it in the "Citations" section.

**A note about PHOTOS. If you are here, you are most likely a family member. The photos on these pages, many of which were generously shared with me, are here for those who want them. They are our family treasures and should be shared and preserved. Feel free to download any you would like to have. (Right click, save as.)

FAMOUS PEOPLE In This Tree (Use the Relationship Tool to see if you're related to any of these!)

Edwin Boston Mabry: The builder of the Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County, Virginia. The Mabry Mill is the most photographed mill in the world and is visited by hundreds of thousands each year.

Frank Mitchell Beamer (1946-____): The well known football coach of Virginia Tech.

People involved in the Carroll County Courthouse Tragedy: Floyd Allen (1856-1913), J. Sidna Allen (1866-1941), Claud Allen (1889-1913) William Sidna Edwards (1889-1933), Wesley Victor Edwards (1891-1939); these among others in this tree.

FAMILY MYSTERIES: I'm sure there are many I'm not aware of, but one stands out for the moment. On the morning of Tuesday, March 18, 1941, why did Charles David Robinson suddenly murder his wife, then take his own life. They were by all accounts an untroubled couple that had raised their children and enjoyed a successful farming life. But for some unknown reason Charles ate his breakfast, beat his wife Kate Burnett Robinson to death, walked into a nearby field and shot himself. You can read the newspaper account in his notes section.

**Notes on my methods.
You'll notice that all females are listed under their maiden name, this avoids confusion, especially if they were married more than once. If their maiden name isn't known, then their last name is listed as "Unknown". I include all Census information that I find in the "More Information About" section under the name of the Head of the Household on that Census. So if you're looking for Census information on a female, it would appear first under her parents and later under her husband unless she lived alone or was the head of the household. You may find Census information for a person under their children as well if they lived with them in their latter years. A note on Birth Dates: I use the birth date listed on their birth record if found. If any other records have a different date, it's noted, but not used as their birth date.

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
