About The Earnshaw Family
Earnshaw meaning Eagle Wood.
The Earnshaw family came over with William the Conqueror, or at least in his footsteps as they seem to have left St Vallery dur Somme (Piccardy) in 1068/69.They were falconers and minor lords.
By 1326 Richard de Eanshagge (Earnshaw)was Lord of Wakefield and Agbrigg. However, it was also said that the Earnshaws had lived in the area since before Norman times and were a Norse family.
For about 1000 years Earnshaws have lived on the Pennines, stretching from the Peak District up to the Yorkshire Dales.
The Earnshaws have a tremendous scientific/engineering background eg Thomas Earnshaw (renowned clockmaker) Samuel Earnshaw (Theorem on magnetics) and Earnshaw Hall at Sheffield University and several scholarships were endowed by the Earnshaw family.
This particular Earnshaw family tree has been traced back as far as Norfolk and Suffolk from where a number of them moved and settled in London. They were involved with engineering with both rail and shipping connections.Daniel Earnshaw snr was a marine engineer who was contracted by the Spanish government to be Foreman of the Arsenal in Manila, Philippines. It is from his first wife that the Filipino side of the family developed and the English family from his second wife.It is interesting to note that his first family were given Spanish first names whereas the family from his second wife (also filipina) were given English names and were recorded as British citizens.
