About Berning , Ohio
Please sign in to see more.
Bernings were haymakers and when a farmer had more than one son, he could only will the farm to one of them. The others had to try to marry into a farm or learn a trade and move to the city. These weren't easy, so many became hay workers in order to get enough at least to marry. They offered work skills to a farmer, lived in a hay house and sometimes the old farmer gave them some land if they worked a few extra days a year. Because it wasn't enough they were weavers or carpenters or sought work in nearby Holland. The father of the emigrants and his ancestors were probably teachers. Several of the haymakers, through hard work managed to get their own farms.
Franz Winter related from the Sandman-Krumme branch of the tree.
