About THE ' WHITLOW - INGERSOLL ' FAMILY TREE
This tree could now be retitled : "" WHITLOW - JONES - McLEOD - INGERSOLL - MIDDLETON - LESSLEY TREE "" , since it contains so many of these surnames.

The Family name of " WHITLOW " is a Cheshire, UK name meaning Dweller at the White Hill from the Old English words HWIT meaning white and HLOEW , meaning hill or burial mound.

Thus we find this name to belong to a locational category identifying the place where the original bearer of the name formerly resided.

This surname probably came into use in the centuries after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. In the reign of Edward II ( 1307 - 1327 ) , surnames became general amongst all people, and there must have been " Whitlows " living in more than one English village.

The research for this "tree' commenced in the seventies through the combined efforts of Graham Whitlow, Keith Middleton and John Muskett. It has recently been expanded with the contributions of Gillian Owen Schuler and Karen Lessley Ingersoll.
