About Allens of Person County, NC
The surnames Allen, Allin, Allan,Alleyn, etc are of Celtic origin and mean someone from the `green plain`. Their popularity was due to a Breton and Welsh saint called Allin whose meaning was thought to be `harmony`. It was brought to England by Alain Fergaint, count of Brittany, and Alin le Roux, first earl of Richmond, who were companions of William the Conqueror.
John Allen was sheriff of London in 1471 and Sir John Allen was sheriff there in 1518 and lord mayor in 1525 and 1535.
In Virginia William Allen arrived in 1621 and was living in James City County in 1624. Fifty eight Allens were officers in the American Revolutionary Army. Info from article by J C Downing -- Fayetteville Observer Times
