About My Family History Research
Ancestor Photos Video
This family tree site was originally devised as a solution to sharing information to my immediate family about our ancestors.
Other ideas I thought of tended to become limited. A printed book is a lovely keepsake, but the nature of this research is that the family grows, so I would have had to endlessly reprint books as new information and new family members are found. This is also true of a digital copy on CD or USB.
I have attached the latest PDF copy of the family story. This can be found in the Media/Other Files menu.
Researching my family seems to be a never ending process. Once one piece of information has been found it leads to further questions and further research.
And families grow. I am constantly torn between going upwards to find ancestors as far back as I can,and going downwards to see if there is anyone still living who is remotely related.
And then, just as important for me, is going sideways. I am not content with finding Great Aunts and Uncles. I want to follow their families too. I want to find their children and their childrens' children.
Another factor in my decision for a digital record is my inquisitiveness. I am not content just to find who these people were, I want to know every detail of their life. Where did they live? What job did they do? What was happening in the world when they were alive? What was life like for them? Were they rich or poor? Did they have a comfortable life or did they struggle to survive?
So I needed a platform that could expand as my knowledge and inquisitiveness expanded. I wanted to find a way of sharing what I have found out whilst allowing my family to explore this information according to their own personal interests.
And since starting this site, I have found that it is a very useful tool for explaining how I came to decisions about facts which are dubious or difficult to prove.
So now, for me, sharing my information to others is a secondary concern. If people want to read this and explore, that is a bonus.
About information in this site:
I have written personal stories about those people I believe to be/know to be correct. I have presented only facts which are supported by documentation (a list of which can be found under "Citations" in the Tree section, and in the "Photos" section of the Media menu ). Everyone else should be viewed with an open mind.
I have also started work on a timeline document which shows family events in relation to historical events. It is a work in progress but the latest version is attached to the relevant people and can also be found under Media/Other Files.
Notes About Links:
A Vision of Britain through Time brings together historical surveys of Britain to create a record of how the country and its localities have changed. It can be used to find out information on places, jobs, housing and much more.
At Find A Grave you’ll find details about cemeteries and individual memorials for many people buried in those cemeteries. Memorials generally include birth, death and burial information and may include pictures, biographies, family information and more. Members can contribute what they know and can leave remembrances via 'virtual flowers' on the memorials they visit, completing the virtual cemetery experience.

Getting Around There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.
In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool. |
