About Fordyce Montgomery's
Please sign in to see more.
This website is the culmination of years of work completed by our late father, Harry Henderson Montgomery. It is testimonial to his love of family and history as well as a tribute to his determination to collect and share his work on our family tree with those around him.

In honour of our father, I (Joan Montgomery) invite you to not only review the material provided but to add to it as well simply by contacting me, in my capacity as the administrator.

The name Montgomery is a proud Norman name with a recorded history that spans over one thousand years. You will find our footprints embedded in Viking, French, English, Scottish, Northern Irish, American and Canadian history (just to name a few). We were soldiers, poets, urban working class folk, farmers and landed gentry. We embraced and defended our religion, whether it be as a Catholic loyal to Queen Mary of Scotland or as a Norman Protestant during the French religious wars. We won fortunes and titles and lost them just as readily. The best historical synopsis of our early beginnings was written by a Montgomery from the Northern Irish leg of the family. You will find it under the "Stories" section entitled "Origin of the Montgomery Name".

Here is what Dad, had to say:

"The Montgomeries in Fordyce are descendants of Normans who came to Scotland in the 13th Century. Recent DNA testing puts this family in haplogroup R1b which confirms Norman ancestry in the so-called "noble line". The family tree displayed in this web-site is based upon my PAF
database file which contains much more detail plus records of sources. From the generation of George Montgomery and Isabella Strachan to the present the documentation is extensive and based upon Old Parish Records as well as the more recent government records which started in 1851. The two earlier generations before George are still being researched but I have included them because they were included in a family history compiled by my great Grandfather James Montgomery."

In recent years, our families have moved and settled in around the globe. You will find generations of Montgomery and Rae families in places such as Australia and The Netherlands. Their surnames have changed but their roots are the same.
