About The Höckelberg Family Tree
Hockelberg or Hoeckelberg, all Höckelbergs originated from the same small area of Lower Saxony roughly encompassing Lengin, Meppen, Weser-Ems in the west, to Fürstenau, Bersenbrück to Schwagstorf, Bersenbrück in the east. Most immigrants were from Fürstenau. The surname no longer exists in Germany.

The first known Höckelberg immigrant to America was Herman John Hockelberg, born in 1822 in Schwagstorf, Bersenbrück, Germany. Schwagstorf is the closest town to the east of Fürstenau (home of most Höckelbergs). This immigrant came to Clinton County, Illinois in 1838 and was a veteran of the US-Mexican war. After the war, he returned to Clinton County, Illinois where he raised his family.

The next known Höckelberg immigrant to America was Johann Bernhard Hockelberg, born in 1834 in Lengin, Meppen, Weser-Ems, Niedersachsen, Germany. Lengin is a few miles west of Fürstenau (home of most Höckelbergs). This immigrant came to the USA in 1854 and he settled in Alleghany, Sierra Co., California, where he was a miner during the gold-rush days. His brother, Johann Franz Hockelberg, arrived in 1858 and joined him in California.

The next known Höckelberg immigrant to America was Bernhard Heinrich Philipp Hoeckelberg, born in 1841 in Fürstenau, Bersenbrück, Germany. He arrived in 1866 and quickly settled in Liberty Twp., Porter County, Indiana, where he raised his family. His first wife, Anna (née Kuehl), died young in 1875 and is buried with her daughter, Mary, who was born that year, and died in 1878. Their burials were in the historic James-Schrock Cemetery, Liberty Twp., Porter County, Indiana. Bernhard next married Mary (née Krieter) in 1875, with whom he raised 9 children.

Bernhard's younger brother, Friedrich Wilhelm Hockelberg, born in 1844, immigrated in 1869 aboard the ship Weser. Fred settled next door to his brother Bernhard in Liberty Twp., Porter County, Indiana, where he raised his family. Note that despite living their adult lives next door to each other, and being buried next to each other in McCool Cemetery, they spelled their surnames differently, for reasons unknown.

Bernhard and Fred's older brother, Johann Heinrich Hoeckelberg, born in 1838, was the next arrival in 1884 aboard the ship Eider. He established his home in Hammond, Lake County, Indiana where he established his family. He spelled the family surname the same as his brother Bernhard.
