About Haldane/Hyde Down Under
Please sign in to see more. This tree was started in June 2008, then not much was done to it until 2009, so it is definitely a work in progress. More names and information will be added as time goes on. It is tracing the maternal family line of Joanna Mary Ketley HYDE who came to New Zealand with her father and step-mother Alice Maud GRIFFITHS in 1929 on the good ship Corinthic from Shropshire in the UK. The family settled on a farm in the Katikati area, where her brother Kenneth Cheadle HYDE had migrated to on a farm scholarship in 1924. Joanna became a homecraft teacher, eventually moving to Wanganui to teach. Some of her family were involved in the iron works industry in Britain at the height of the industrial revolution, mainly in the West Midland areas of Worcester, Warwickshire, and Shropshire. Research is ongoing in this area so stay tuned. There is much to discovered.
Joanna married another school teacher, Gilbert Ross HALDANE, in 1937, but it was to be a tragically short relationship, as Ross died in 1939 just before his son was born. This is also tracing the story of the HALDANE family from Scotland who came 'down under' in the 1840's to settle in Australia with some of the family migrating across the Tasman to settle in New Zealand to farm in the Takaka District near Nelson. Gold mining was also on the agenda for some of them. There is more of this HYDE family to be discovered so the journey will encompass other families such as the ROBINSONS, GRIFFITHS and many more. This story began from a basic family tree drawn by Joanna, and I have been lucky enough to meet a distant cousin who has helped to flesh out a lot of the facts and to verify same. Thank you to everyone who is helping with this project. Enjoy the journey as the trip unfolds, and please advise of any errors or ommissions. Stay tuned for the stories.
