Iriwhata Hanita was born in the middle of the 19th Century about 1850 at Waipukurau Pa, and he died in 1926 at Rākautātahi, he is buried at Tapairu Pa. He was one of three born to Hanita Te Maero and Huriana Manene. He had two sisters Kerenapu and Miriama Tahi.
Iriwhata married four times 1. Rahera 2. Ataria 3. Maharata 4. Takurangi. He had three children
with his first wife Rahera. Iriwhata married Ataria Mako Karena (from whom we descend) about 1874
or 75. Ataria is the daughter of Karena Ruataniwha of Omahu and Pipi Maharata Mauku.
Iriwhata and Ataria had ten children, Rikirangi, Whakahewa, Miriama Te Hokimate (Noti), Te Maero,
Mokai, Waengarangi I, Meri (Noihu), Neta, Waengarangi II, and Te Apatu (Jack).
