About The Hager / McClanahan Family
Hello. My name is John Scott Hager and I am webmaster of this site. The Hager side of my family begins
in Germany in the mid 1500s with Gerhard Heuger. The greatest emphasis, however, is spent documenting relatives in and around Schoharie, New York in the 1700s. My 5th great grandfather, Johann Heinrich Hager (better known as Henry Hager)moved with his family to the New World in 1710, as part of the Palantine immigration from Germany, leaving behind the unpleasantness of unfair taxes, near constant wars, several bitterly cruel winters in a row and occasional religious persecution. His father died shortly after his arrival in New York and he eventually settled in the area of Schoharie, NY. Although the facts of his life are somewhat sketchy, he was certainly a patriot, family man and land owner. He is said to have fought in the French and Indian War (I have yet to find proof of this), the American
Revolution and was captured by the British and Indians at the age of 78 and held prisoner for over a year. Henry was truly the patriarch of this branch of the Hager tree. He had several children whose lives also helped shaped the forming of this great country. In addition to the Hagers, the were other related families in the area who were equally pivotal in the the shaping of American. A few were: Vroomans, Swarts, Beckers, Mattices, Patchins and Lawyers. This Hager tree will show how these families intermingled and intermarried, often joining a bride and groom who, at the very least, were previously distant cousins and often, first cousins. In mentioning the sponsors at baptisms, I have tried to show their relationships to the newborn. The names and dates on this tree are slowly being completed but their stories are not. The McClanahan side of the family is equally rich, if not more so, with historical significance. Among its branches are passengers of the Mayflower, U. S. Presidents, Civil War veterans and even British royalty. Navigate and enjoy this site at your leisure and let me know of any added informaton that you might have.
I would be remiss if I did not credit Bruce Christopher, my second cousin once removed, for the lion's share of the information presented in the Taylor and Allen tree. He has generously given me names, dates, places, stories and photos (along with sources) of this portion of my family. Without his contribution this section would be, at best, minimal. Thanks, Bruce!! As of late 2011 I am indebted once again to a distant relative for information on one of the branches of the Taylor tree. David Johnson, great great grandson of Thomas Low Taylor and great grandson of Wm/
Clyde Taylor, has graciously given me facts, stories and photos from this line. As such, I am listing him as a source for several names, dates and stories. In addition all of the photos and newspaper clippings accompanying all of these Taylor's are in his possession and, thus, directly linked to these individuals.
I am constantly searching for more information and anecdotes on individuals and will keep updating this site as I do. Please enjoy your search and let me know of any corrections or additional information you might have.
    Thank you, Scott Hager
