About This Golden Land
Please sign in to see more. 'This Golden Land"words from my Scottish great grandfather's diary written 1n the 1860's,it was not in the context of praising a wonderful country to which he had emigrated ,but in a derogatory tone as he despaired of his decision to leave"home"obviously always Scotland.... to the
land of the Gold Rush.
This tree is dedicated to my mother, who never had the opportunity to know or meet any of her grandparents or relatives, living in England and the Channel Islands,as her parents" eloped "to Canada, living first there, and later in the U.S.A.before migrating to Australia during World War 1.
It is also for my children who did not know my mother as she died before my marriage. I would like them one day,to pass on the details of their family history to my grandchildren,so they may know their heritage.
My ancestry is essentially English,Irish,Scottish, and (originally)Norman French in the Channel Islands where they lived in Guernsey,Jersey and Sark. The first "Australian",my paternal great grandfather, came here, not by choice, but exiled as a transported convict from England in 1847.His wife,an Irish orphan girl followed in the Pauper Emigration Scheme in 1849.Next came my Scottish great grandfather in 1856,in the wake of the Highland and Island Emigration Scheme, his second wife,my great grandmother, another Irish Immigrant girl in 1858,,and finally my Canadian born mother in 1914,with her English born mother and Channel Islander father.
I have also included many families that have intermarried with those of mine and my husband's,as I found many fascinating stories among them and many have made their mark amongst colonial Australian history.
Many thanks to Terry Dowinton for his enormous contribution to our Channel Islands Family Tree.Peter Hugo has been of great and invaluable assistance . Joan Coxon from Melton Mowbray has sent wonderful old photos, whose faces resemble their Australian relatives.Shirley Farrell and Grace McDonald,my cousins, have been generous in sharing their memorabilia of our grandparents.Lee Hill has guided me through the long journey into our Scottish history, and without her help this tree would be greatly reduced.
