About The Carroll Family
Carrolls'have lived in Ringabella since the 1700's.Ringabella at that time was made up of Agricultural workers,Mining workers, lace workers(a cottage industry)Fishermen and in the late 1800's and early 1900's a lot of young men joined the British Navy. A large mine was operating in Ringabella in 1837 run by an English company and employing 400 workers but by the end of the 1800s it is closed. The Carrolls' were all living in Carroll's Glen where each Family had a few acres. They were all Tenant farmers at one stage and Samuel Hodder owned the land that they farmed.Ringabella had a big population in the 1800's and even the potatoe famine didn't seem to make a big difference. They had the advantage of living by the sea so were not solely dependent on potatoes.Denis Carroll is named in The Tithe Applotment Books for Tracton Parish in 1833 as having 12 acres. In 1851 Denis and Philip Carroll are mentioned in the Griffiths Valuation as having land in Ringabella situated in what we know as Carrolls'Glen. In the 1901 census Denis Carroll was living in a thached house in The Glen with 3 farm buildings outside.Timothy Carroll also lived in Carrolls'Glen in 1901 as did Patrick Carroll.Living conditions in 1901 was in a thached house with 2 or 3 rooms and walls made of mud and wood.By 1911 the walls had been changed to stone in all 3 houses. In the early 1900's the numbers of Carrolls'started to drop as they moved away ,immigrated,or died. Timothy Carroll (my Grandfather)moved to the cottage where Margaret(Philip's Daughter)now lives around 1917 as my Father Denis was the first of the family to be born there (1918) Minnie(MinPad)was the last member of the Carroll Family to live in The Glen and she died in 1951. My Grandparents'Timothy and Margaret both died in 1932 and left a large Family (11 children) Kathleen who was the oldest took over the everyday running of the home and Philly took over the farm. There are still Carrolls' living in Ringabella,Margaret lives in the original Carroll cottage and my sister Claire lives second next door.Timothy died at home in Ringabella of a brain haemorrhage and is buried in the old cemetery in Nohoval.I tried to find the grave but as no headstone exists it proved impossible.Margaret died in St. Finbarrs Hospital of pnumonia and cardiac problems and she's buried in Tracton Abbey. No trace of this grave either but she may be buried in The Desmond plot.
