Welcome to The McCANN`s of KY...`From 500 B.C. to 2023`....Egypt-Ireland-America-Kentucky & Beyond.....
About The McCann Family of KY
The McCann's according to tradition are a Milesian people descended from Colla-de-Chrioch, the first King of Orghilla or Oriel. The Kingdom of Oriel encompassed the land from County Donegal to County Louth in Ireland. Oriel is almost synonymous with Ulster. Colla-de-Chrioch, a southern conqueror of Ulster, was one of the Three Collas. The identity of the folks who lived in Oriel is shrouded in mystery. Historians who give credence to their existence generally place Colla-de-Chrioch's conquest of Ulster in 331 A.D. The McCann's descended from Breassail, a grandson of Colla-de-Chrioch. It is well accepted that the McCann's originated on the banks of Lough Neagh, they were called the Lords of Clan Breassail, located on the southern shores of Lough Neagh. The McCann surname is considered to be among the earliest hereditary surnames in the world. Ireland was one of the first countries to adopt surnames. the surname McCann began to be used in the 12th Century. It's original form was Mac Anna and means "son of Annadh" which was the given name of an early McCann Chieftain. It has taken many forms over the years: MacCann, MaCann, McCan, Mac Anna, Cann, Canny, McCanney, Macan, Makan, Mican, McKann, Michan, McKeand and today's form McCann. No matter the spelling we are all still McCann's. Our personal line began with "Big John" McCann and his family coming down the Ohio River in 1790 and stopping along where the Scioto River empties into the Ohio. While out scouting the area they were attacked by Indians and some were killed.(See story on "Big" John and the Scioto River Incident). "Big" John made it to Limestone or what is now known as Maysville, Kentucky. He lived for a short time in the Quicks Run area of Lewis County then from there they moved to Miller's Station in Bourbon County.
After the danger of Indian attacks passed he moved & settled on a farm in what is now Nicholas County at Carlisle, then onto Paris, KY. where "Big John" was a "BLACKSMITH" by trade & "FARMER" His son William returned to Lewis County, Ky and married Jane McKenzie and settled at Elksburg near the headwaters of Quicks Run. And through William and Jane came our branch of "The McCann's of KY." I am proud and glad to be a part of this family.I hope you enjoy the site and the stories...This Family Tree was started more than 30 years ago by Delbert E.
