About The Lowe Family
The Lowe's were Irish Palatines, descendants of people who uprooted their families and fled to distant countries from their homeland in Germany in the year 1709.In 1648 the 30 years war ended. The war had ruined the German provinces when King Louis of France decided to annex the Palatinate. Then in 1685 he revoked the Edict of Nantes which guaranteed the religious and political freedoms enjoyed by Protestants.Exorbitant taxes were levied and people were weary of the war and finally a miserable winter caused the failure of the grape harvest which was very important to their livelihood. Many elected to leave Germany and opportunities were being offered for a new life in Canada and America. In Apr of 1709 the journey down the Rhine began just as the armies of Louis were destroying the towns of the Lower Palatinate and it was reported that one thousand refugees were arriving in Rotterdam daily. Queen Ann offered refuge in London and began sending ships. Ann's great aunt had married the Elector Palatine and their daughter Sophia was married to the Elector of Hanover. Sophia was Queen Ann's heiress presumptive and her son was eventually to become King George 1, so Queen Anne had an interest in the Palatine.Unfortunately England was ill equipped to receive so many refugees and they had to be housed in warehouses and tents and given food and clothing. The conditions were terrible and many died due to overcrowding and disease resulting in mass burials.Eventually a committee was appointed to find settlement for families and the Earl of Wharton petitioned the queen to send as many families as she saw fit to settle on the large estates in Ireland. More than 800 families elected to go-more than three thousand souls. Mathew Lous who's name appeared on the Rotterdam lists is believed to be the ancestor to whom all of the Lohes,Lowes and Lowe Irish Palatines from Nantinan Parish are related.

John Lowe left Limerick Ireland Apr 11,1842 aboard the ship "Jane Black" along with 416 other passengers. The ship ran aground 10 miles east of Point Des Monts lighthouse on May 20th 1842 during a heavy squall and snow storm, about 250 miles below Quebec City. The vessel struck rocks and immediately filled with water, which destroyed the greater part of the passengers provisions and luggage. All passengers were landed safely on the coast which according to reports made by the ships captain was desolate and without inhabitants. There were however some Indians which he either did not consider inhabitants or simply savages. They were able to save some provision which would last approximately 3 days.Tents were erected from the sails of the ship and the passengers were assisted by some of the local Indians they were fortunate enough to encounter. The captain was taken to the opposite shore by the Indians and he trekked to Quebec to request urgent assistance. It took him 6 days to reach Quebec City. A steamer called "Lumber Merchant" was sent immediately for their rescue taking another 4 days to reach them. The passengers aboard the Jane Black were Protestants ,and intended to settle in the western section of the province of Upper Canada. They lost everything they had except for some luggage. Many had brought considerable amounts of money with them but others needed assistance to pay for their passage and provisions to Montreal.
