About Charles Jones Descendants
It was generally believed by many Harrisburg, Pennsylvania relatives that the family originally came from Cheraw, South Carolina. Initially the search was for Sarah Jones, the mother of Lillie Jones who was married to John Wesly Jackson Jr. Many months were spent at the archives searching for Sarah, in Cheraw, SC, to no avail until Anni Jones, a widow aged 56, was discovered living with her son, Charlie aged 20, daughters Willie Mae, aged 18, and Estell, aged 15, son Norman, aged 14, and daughter Lillie, aged 2 in the 1920 Federal census for Cheraw, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. They were not in the 1910 or 1900 census for South Carolina. Genealogical research has provided information indicating this Jones family originated in Lancaster County, South Carolina. The 1870 federal census for Flat Creek Township, Lancaster County, South Carolina revealed Charles Jones and his wife, Phillis, and 10 children living in Flat Creek Township, Lancaster County, South Carolina. The 1880 census revealed Charles and Phillis residing in Flat Creek Township with 6 children and a 17 year old nephew. We can assume the nephew, Henry Jones is the child of a sibling of Charles. His son, Charles Jr. married Ann Blakeney early in 1880 in SC and was residing apart from his parents. Charles and Phillis died sometime after the 1880 census and before the 1900 census. Charles Jr and Ann were still residing in Flat Creek Township and by the 1900 census had 8 children living at home. The 1900 census asked the females how many children they had given birth to, and how many were still living? Ann had given birth to 10 children and 9 were living. Charles Jr. and Ann relocated to Monroe, NC where their daughter Lillie was born sometime after the 1900 census. We do not know what happened to Alice, but the rest of the family can be documented in North Carolina. Ollie, Mary Ella, Eddie, Hattie, Emma, and Lillie were all married in Monroe which indicates Monroe was a major homestead of Charles Jr's family. Charles died November 10, 1915 and sometime after his death and before November 12, 1918 Ann relocated to Cheraw, SC with her children. November 12, 1918 was the date her son, Charlie registered for the World War I draft registration. Ann was listed in the 1920 federal census for SC living in Cheraw, Chesterfield County. Charles Jr.'s brother, Harvey, moved to Jackson Township, Union County, NC around 1899 and appears in the 1900 census for Jackson County, Union County, NC with his wife, Charity, and two sons. Harvey may have been the first of the family to move to Union County, NC but research is ongoing to determine that.
