My interest in the NICOL family started by working backwards from my great-grandfather Edward Ellice, who landed at the port of Galle in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1871 and started the Nicol line there. He was one of the pioneer tea planters in the country.
Much of the information has been obtained from family members who are now scattered all around the world, through searches in genealogy websites and the GOOGLE search engine. To have obtained this information without the use of the internet would have been an unthinkable, mammoth task! As each generation passes by, a lot of information that will never be recovered also goes with them. It is also amazing how people so easily seem to 'forget' who their relations are and their family details. I regret not having started my research earlier - while some of the older generations were still alive. It would have been that much simpler!
The history of my family is quite a varied and colourful one. The family members are spread around the world - the UK, the USA, Sri Lanka, Australia, Fiji, Spain, Belgium, France, Italy, South Korea.... and so the list goes on. This was another reason why I wanted to catalogue our history - for the sake of my children's generation.
The data contained in this website also includes the various other families to whom I am, in one way or another, closely related. They are the BARNETS, WILSONS, BORTFELDTS, DE COOMANS and HERMONS.
Much of the information on the HERMON families has come from Ronald Hermon in New Zealand and his website http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/hermon/index.htm. My thanks to him for the research he has conducted in obtaining the information therein.
I don't believe a Family Tree is ever finished for there are deaths, births and marriages that occur on a regular basis. For those of you who visit this site, I shall welcome feedback concerning any information that is lacking, or errors that are inherent in the information. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
